Trying to order something on a website was not working at the payment step, I tried everything like removing the accent in my name, changing my delivery address, paying with different cards, changing delivery method.

The phone support told me I should see with my bank, but offered to generate an order with a link to pay, so we tried this and it didn't work.

Then, after a second call, I've been told that it was certainly my bank because they spent 10 minutes investigating and they do not block anything, and just at the end, they told me that I should try with a @gmail.com address because they have a system that may block orders from "suspicious addresses". I changed my email to something else (not gmail.com though :D ) and it worked

-_-

Who decided there that gmail.com addresses are more legit than others? Most of the scam I receive is sent from gmail :flan_molotov: :flan_bored:

@solene
Yes I've had that too. My credit card provider kept sending paper statements despite me registering for email. Eventually customer services told me it was because I didn't have a mainstream email address.

Similarly, last year eBay/PayPal refused to authorise me on Firefox because of adblock and cookie block. Advice from tech support was use Chrome. That's half fixed now. It still looks like I'm blocked but if I wait a few minutes the confirmation email arrives.
@matthew

@pthane @solene @matthew I've only occasionally run into issues with my business email address not being accepted in online accounts/stores. So far, it's always been because my domain doesn't use a historical core gTLD (`.tech`, in my case). Similarly, I have enough email accounts that I can use one that I prefer less, if necessary, but annoying to troubleshoot.

@pthane @solene @matthew On a similar note, though far more difficult to work around these days, try not having a cell phone! While I now live in an area with reliable cell service, I live in a mountainous, rural, state in the US where cell service is far from guaranteed, so I got rid of mine nearly a decade ago. Now that 2FA is finally becoming common, but most US services are lazy and only support verification via SMS, there are some services I just can't use. At least tech services have OTP.

OTOH, SMS can at least be received with dumb phones, there are probably also solutions that only work via smartphone app.
Or services that require an app, like when public transportation suddenly stops using tickets on paper (sold by busdrivers or ticket machines) but want you to use an app instead

@Doomed_Daniel @pthane @solene @matthew Dumb phones still require buying a phone and phone plan. You can't really use pre-paid/pay-as-you go plans for 2FA because, in many cases, the phone number can change. Of course, it still comes back to whether cell service is reliably available too. Most SMS codes are only valid for a number of minutes, which may not be enough time to get from a computer to a location with service.
