Listening to John Romero's autobiography (he reads the audiobook) and enjoying it. He's talking about them working at SoftDisk while making Commander Keen on the side. He's talking about the "death schedule" of working from 10a-2a, and kinda enjoying it, because you're working your job, then going home and working on something you're completely into. I haven't felt that much since college, where I was surrounded by like-minded people (which probably helps,) and honestly that saddens me.

Not that I want to be worked to exhaustion, of course. I just want that passion again. And it's empowering to be able to look back over a short time and say "I've made progress".

I'm at the point where Romero is out of Id, and is shopping around for a publishing deal with Tom Hall to finance their new studio.

Imagine having a business meeting with Richard Garriott, a hero of Romero's when they were younger, and asking him to sign an Ultima shirt... Only for Garriott to pull out a Doom shirt and ask you to sign it. What an insane life.

Now in , Ion Storm has just been closed. Romero takes the blame for this and many of the problems in his life. He cites writing the book (and I imagine the speech that spurred it,) with helping him see some of his issues.

He also takes pride in the team he assembled at the time, pointing to the eventual writers of God of War, and a programmer who went on to help repair Healthcare.gov after its horrible launch. .... Wait, what?

"Accept your flaws, reload your save, and try again." This fucking nerd. You gotta love him.
