Have you ever wanted to own what other people bought? Just create a product with software and force users to accept an agreement to use the thing they just bought!

Why is this acceptable when it comes to software? Imagine having to agree to use a chair because another company produced the wood for it. Just because a company made a product, that shouldn't mean they get to forever own what's rightfully yours.

This is one reason I support . If software isn't free, you have no rights.

I've documented the setup for my Twitch Plays streams for TwitchPlaysPaperMario, which sadly got suspended by Twitch recently. You'll notice that my streams are run entirely using !

Apple has announced that it will begin actively monitoring photos and videos stored on iPhones in the US. Whatever it claims it is searching for, what it really is is a way to use proprietary software to constantly search and spy on its users' devices:

Consistently, we see permissive licenses fail to protect our freedoms when companies privatize code made by the community. Look no further than MINIX and the Intel ME - I absolutely would not consider spyware in every modern computer to be in line with freedom.

You can argue Intel would have created their own, but that's beside the point: they took something permissively licensed and privatized it. The license allowed Intel to do whatever it wanted, and we have to pay the price.

The latter is more cost effective. If there's no choice but copyleft, everyone has freedom.

This would be flipped if the same situation were applied to permissive licenses. Users would rarely have any freedom to do what they want with their devices: there's only the illusion of it through choices determined by another entity, often a corporation.

We buy these devices and we deserve to use them how we want. Strong copyleft licenses like GPL are the only solution to actual user freedom.

Tech companies take advantage of free software licensed under permissive licenses to further restrict their users.

Many people use proprietary software because it's more convenient. Now imagine a world in which all existing free software was licensed under GPL. It's more convenient for tech companies to use free software, so in this case they would either pay to create in-house software or use the GPL software.

In there's often a conflict about which freedoms to uphold: the freedom of the individual (permissive inc. MIT/BSD) or the collective freedom of all users (copyleft inc. GPL).

Every modern society has restrictions on what individuals can do so that it functions properly, and software should be no different, given our reliance on it.

Absolute freedom for the individual means you have the freedom to restrict others. This freedom has no meaning because it doesn't affect you.

#DRM is unacceptable anywhere and everywhere it's present, but using it to discriminate against the poor and fuel corporate greed is a special kind of evil.
