As I use Canvas LMS, I am more convinced that we shouldn't let web developers just invent their own basic UI widgets like buttons, check boxes, etc. lol.

Make them assemble pages like in Visual Basic.

Canvas LMS checkboxes let you check the boxes about 75% of the time? If they didn't build their own GUI and used some standardization maybe I could check "this quiz question corresponds to course catalog requirement IV-3-a" 100% of the time.

Granted there have been some ugly ass desktop software UIs. Peek over at the software being run at your oil change place, a doctor's office, etc. etc., when a software company doesn't hire a UI/UX person (and often desktop software feels kind of pre-UX as a defined job) the programmers just throw buttons and checkboxes everywhere without rhyme or reason and make a cluttered mess.

Gosh, software could be so much better but it's a fucking mess cuz decision makers want to save money.

@Moosader
The software I inherited at work is very much like this. For 25 years it was designed, developed, and tested by 1 guy who was very much self taught. The thing is the company really should have had a full dev team for at least 20 of those years so the guy never had the time to improve his UX. He was just constantly racing to keep up with the demands of the field as it were. Now there's always tons of pushback any time you try to clean up the UX because folx fear change.

@thelobdegg Yeah I've been on codebases at small companies where at first they had one dev, and he was like the startup CEO working in Visual Basic .NET, or some psychology major who worked in the computer lab at the school, and self-taught himself some Telerik tools to make a website.

And I've never worked at a place that was like "ok, we have extra time, go fix up whatever you want to!" - Except maybe once place, but I worked on CLI utils there, hah.

@Moosader
Yeah, whenever I have a clear way of doing it I've been trying to implement better UX while fixing other issues. I've had a little success but not as much as I would like.
