@Omstero the first question is whether the game is even the type of game I want to play - there are genres that I'm not interested in at all and other genres I'm super interested in
Then a quick look at a screenshot to see whether it looks well made
Then if it passes those tests I take a look at more detailed things like description and ratings

Where "exciting" means it's exciting for me. Not excitingly cut (lot's of action, lot's of cuts, showing off *only* the most beautiful parts of the game)
* Is it a genre I would enjoy
* Is the gameplay something I would enjoy
* Are graphics and audio consistent
* Does the trailer actually show gameplay or is it mostly cutscene material
* Does the trailer represent what I can expect when playing this game
Sure the game being from a dev/publisher I already trust is a plus, but not necessary.
