Taffer 🇨🇦 :godot:

With the news that Google is going to "supercharge" Maps with "AI" (and the poor results I've had with Apple Maps), I finally checked out OpenStreetMap: openstreetmap.org/

OMG THIS IS AMAZING. So much more useful detail! Incredible! Going to dig up an app for my phone and use this for a while to see how it compares to the ad- and AI-ridden nonsense.

OpenStreetMapOpenStreetMapOpenStreetMap is a map of the world, created by people like you and free to use under an open license.

@Taffer for starters, I can very much recommend @organicmaps as mobile App.

@eliasp @Taffer @organicmaps I second OrganicMaps, it is a great app, but it does some weird stuff for navigation, but if you just need to look stuff up and figure out where you are and what amenities are nearby, it is great!

@organicmaps @nicemicro @eliasp @Taffer one thing I notice is OM takes quite a long time to notice that I didn't take the proposed route and instead went another way. It probably has to do with the weigh-off in the following hypothesis-testing: H=”The agent has left the route”. By reducing the Type-1 error of rejecting the H although it is true one increases the Type-2 error of accepting the H although it is wrong.

@organicmaps @nicemicro @eliasp @Taffer Because Type-1 error is obviously more important than Type-2 (because people usually stay on the proposed route), my problem, the Type-2, loses the weigh-off and can probably only be decreased if GPS-accuracy is increased, right?

@tillmanreuter @organicmaps @nicemicro @eliasp @Taffer can you please check our existing github issues and create a new one for this case?

@tillmanreuter That can sometimes be due to poor GPS signal; if you're in a dense urban area / aren't using Google Location Services with precision enhancement (wifi scanning) / your phone has poor GPS reception or a weird GPS chip/library, the inaccuracy can sometimes only be noticed at speed.

If you compare other GPS apps, there's always a little bit of lag between leaving a route and the app noticing, you're right that it's always a tradeoff (recalculating a route unnecessarily is no fun)

@organicmaps @nicemicro @eliasp @Taffer I agree, perfectly fine !!
I use #organicmaps as my only nav app 🙂

Might depend on where you are, and the quality of the maps there, not sure..,

@nicemicro @gertvk @organicmaps @eliasp @Taffer thanks for heads up! Did you already create an issue for it on our GitHub?

@organicmaps @nicemicro @eliasp @Taffer It tries to take you through lorry loading bays to supermarkets rather than along the road and car park. But, if you realise that there are people out there who insist that the Cornish coastal path is a road because Google maps said it was, this glitch isn't so weird and can be worked round.

@eliasp @Taffer @organicmaps
On top of Organic Maps, I recently "discovered" OsmAnd - a bit different audience, but some of the (many) features are really nice, like track recording and uploading to OSM, displaying address ranges on entrances etc.

@richlv @eliasp @Taffer #Osmand is at least my preferred Swiss Army knife for Navigation on Android. For Car navigation #MagicEarth is a really good choice with #osm support .

@eliasp @Taffer @organicmaps The map is beautiful but unfortunately (and un-organically) it can't navigate by public transport.

@joeroe @eliasp @Taffer @organicmaps hey, not everything at once. Organic Maps is developed by volunteers in our free time, for donations. We’ll implement public transport and other complex features if we get enough donations and user support.

@eliasp @organicmaps @joeroe @Taffer all those apps are a fromtend on top of the online services that are the core of PT, and should be implemented.

@eliasp @organicmaps @joeroe @Taffer I love the #Oeffi app - used it during my college days in Berlin, when I got out of a pub late and it showed me the nearest bus stops and told me when which buses were going there. Now I use it on vacation abroad and in the small town I live in.

@organicmaps @eliasp @Taffer It's not a criticism, just a reason why it doesn't currently work as a Google Maps replacement for many people.

@Taffer If you need an app for navigation, I've always liked CoPilot. You download the maps, so it'll work without a data connection

@Taffer Welcome. 😁 Remember, if you see a mistake, you can fix it yourself.

@Taffer Begs the question, what systems (social and technological) exist within OSM to prevent people from submitting "AI" data? How are those systems validated? What transparency around them is provided? How are they updated and refined as new automated plagiarism technology is unleashed?

@Taffer For Open Street Maps in iOS I highly recommend Organic Maps. It’s incredibly good.
One of my favorites in new cities is filtering for sights and it will show murals and sculptures in the neighborhood. Also great to find ping pong tables, drinking water, benches in parks, bicycle parking, and more.

@Taffer
OsmAnd user here. A little bit clunky UI, but stellar features! I have created custom map views for my needs: a view thst shows all the cafe's when strolling in the town for example

This is the Android OSM app I use:
f-droid.org/en/packages/net.os

You download all the maps locally and it draws them on your phone. One time, me and my friends were in a rural area and I was the only one that could navigate because they couldn't download tiles from Google.

f-droid.orgOsmAnd~ | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App RepositoryGlobal Mobile Map Viewing & Navigation for Offline and Online OSM Maps

@Taffer

It's open-source and you can download a free version on the Google Play Store, but the people who make it also sell an "OsmAnd+" for $30.

I trust the f-droid version more than either of them, but the free one on the app store might be basically the same.

@MegaMichelle

Actually, the #fdroid version of #OsmAnd is more similar to the paid version, than the "free" version from the app store

@Taffer

@Taffer

Last time I tried to use Google Maps, the actual map took up a tiny slice of the screen.

When I'm trying to navigate my way to a location, I don't need ads and other stuff taking up most of the screen. I want a map.

This is a map.

@Taffer I'm looking forward to the day that they hook it up to a flight simulator 😃👍

@Taffer What I love is how easy it is to add to it. If you see a mistake, or an improvement you can often add to it in minutes. Feels oddly satisfying.

@Taffer if you like OSM, check out the @streetcomplete app. But don't blame me if it eats up your free time 😁

@Taffer I would strongly recommend osmand for using OSM. you can purchase it once and then its yours forever. The features have been killer.

@Taffer@mastodon.gamedev.place The main issue I've had with every non Google Maps app is the public transport directions. One thing to look for may be to see there is a local timetable service you can get from them for instead.

@Taffer

@Taffer Great apps for OSM

OSMAnd osmand.net -download maps in advance, never get lost

StreetComplete streetcomplete.app - make contributions to improve the map further

@Taffer I've been using OSM for years, they're great. The location maps I need for my work are based on OSM. When a road in my area got washed out some time ago, OSM was updated within a few hours, while GoogleMaps led you to a dead end on a major road for weeks.

@Taffer @rysiek And (as it used to be the case with Google?) if something is wrong or missing: You can just go fix it! How wonderful is that?

@philip @Taffer

> as it used to be the case with Google

Google started their "you can fix it" thing, I believe, to suck the air out of OSM. They failed, thankfully.

@Taffer
OSM is amazing. I only use Google Maps for driving instructions, but everything else is OSM.
