Taffer :godot: 🇨🇦

I'm actually getting frustrated with running a rolling release; Tumbleweed has had a lot of problems over the last few weeks: graphical login screen crashing to console when I move the mouse, Wayland + KDE Plasma 6 hanging during login just before showing the desktop, CapsLock being locked on when I wake the laptop from sleep.

Bazzite's right there, and Fedora is officially supported on Framework. 🤔

@Taffer I've been on Arch for many years and honestly been super happy. It's been pretty unfair, I've had less problems with it than with some LTS distros. But there is an entry barrier, the install is pretty rough (though apparently the archinstall script is pretty good these days)

That said, I never had much luck with Tumbleweed myself either so maybe there's that? Leap, on the other hand, is my LTS of choice, love it to bits

@VileLasagna Endeavour is also on my short list these days, and its install is easy. I won’t try to use ZFS 😅

@Taffer Every time I'm here waiting desperately for a new ZFS version so I can finally update my system I really wish I'd just wean off it and use something else

And then I remember I spent 6 months with a broken hard drive and not only didn't end up losing any data (that I know of) but the whole frikkin volume was just chugging along reconstructing stuff on the fly like the disk was still there

Unhinged stuff. I'm never going to find this level of resilience anywhere else remotely reasonable

@Taffer Anyway, that new ZFS dropped TODAY. As long as Linux 6.14 doesn't come out tomorrow we're home free boyz!

@Taffer for me bazzite just works :) i used debian sid with similar problems you mentioned.

@Taffer do it! It's just great! Bluefin for me at least

@Taffer
To play devil's advocate, most of these kinda issues are caused by kernel, graphical layer and desktop updates....which we often do for stable releases in fedora anyway. On a slower schedule, but we do them.

@Taffer Not seen any of these issues with #Kalpa, but I don't know what hardware you might be running. (For instance, I don't have anything with nvidia graphics to test on).

Might try giving it a shot.

@sfalken Framework 16 laptop with the AMD discrete GPU; probably a combo of new kernel, new drivers, new Wayland, and new KDE

@Taffer Fwiw, about seven or eight years ago, for five months, i ran :opensuse: #openSUSE #Tumbleweed #KDE #Plasma. It was mostly nice, but punctuated by periods of extreme frustration [eg, filesystem going read-only]. Since December 2019 i've run / am running :archlinux: :kde: :plasma: #ArchLinux #KDEPlasma , originally #X11, but for the last ~two years #Wayland. It is wonderful 💜 . Ergo, here's another rolling option for you to consider, with a lovely Plasma UX.

@MsDropbear42 I’ve been eyeing Endeavour as a possibility too, and I do like having up to date everything. I’ve got friends running Arch (btw), but I’m too lazy (err, busy) for the vanilla installation process. 😅

@Taffer Not all distros work on all hardware I use for years opensuse in all its flavors and it works fine for me, so I hope you find your home where you can enjoy.

@Taffer NixOS unstable once things get sorted out?

@zstg I haven’t tried Nix, but it seems like more effort than I have spoons for these days. People seem to really like it though!
