Alright everyone, crisis averted. I fixed it by updating my time-honored Linux audio repair techinque of "uninstall pulseaudio" to "make sure that neither pulseaudio nor pipewire are installed".

The more things change the more they stay the same 😌

A screenshot of my desktop showing the sound settings now report a real sound device instead of a dummy device. Also I have the intro to Chrono Trigger running in ZSNES in another window for good measure.
