I got Half-Life 1 in 2003, and it 100% lived up to all the hype. I adored its map editor, whereas other engines were impenetrable to 16 yo me. After HL2 released I spent many evenings modding the Source engine. It was such a huge influence on me as a game dev. I can’t believe it’s been 20 years!

For anyone remotely interested in the process of game development, the 20th anniversary update has commentary by the developers which are absolute gems. They’re really gonna make me play through the game yet another time 😆

@ahsanfayaz didn't go as far as modding back then, but yeah started making maps on hammer during CSS LAN sessions, I guess I haven't let go of wanting to be in gamedev since then
I do miss the source engine mods era though, so much quality stuff and fun bright ideas out there

@aokami hahaha ok so when I say “Source modding” I actually mean “writing Lua scripts in Garry’s Mod”, but I had to make the character limit. The engine hooks provided by GMod were extensive enough that you were effectively modding the engine itself, with much friendlier interface.

@aokami and yeah back then there used to be so many mods, for almost every game out there. I think it’s a combination of newer games discouraging or blocking mods altogether, and small teams preferring to use full engines like Unity or Unreal for their ideas
