It must be some kind of cognitive bias where you're so blinkered you don't want to admit your overwhelming prejudices even to yourself. Not wanting to change your view even if your offspring has direct expertise and spends their life studying what you profess not to believe in.
This is the fantastic Dr Kate Marvel. I'd take her view over an insurance company on climate change any day. Actually, I'd probably take her view over an insurance company on insurance.
It may be an error by those of us who spend time trying to understand and deconstruct social norms not to realise what fills most people's heads. Us v them (=deserving vs undeserving, sensible vs malicious etc), maintaining tradition whatever the price, who to blame, social status and appearance, what opinion is trendy...
It took me five years to convince CelloDad (who used to work for Shell) that climate change is real. For five years, our children had ringside seats to what a scientific argument looks like, and yes, sometimes they would say things like "okay break it up you two".
But CelloDad, also a physicist, eventually had to admit that the evidence could not be ignored. And ever since the children got their peaceful dinner table back.

.3. stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.
4. Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular, non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places, and under any circumstances, to deal and/or associate with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake.
5. A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.
