In case you are concerned about picking a server will restrict you to a certain place, it won't. A couple months ago I did a poll asking people from where they were seeing my post, and of around 6.5k votes 96% were from outside the instance I'm at, gamedev. Show this to your friends that are worried about the onboarding process of picking a servers.

@djlink Also worth noting that you can get clients which allow easy browsing of local timelines of other servers than the one you signed up with.
