ohh I'm so glad I ditched my wordpress blog in favor of Hugo a couple weeks ago. Also sucks for Tumblr.

@djlink seems to me that there are a lot of websites confusing people about this, because this is about the wordpress.com website, not the wordpress.org cms. Like when MS scraped github, but not all git repos everywhere. Kinda silly for the cms software and the blog platform to have the same name and logo. Still... Good for you for making your site more performant though.
@MrBehemo I know they are not the same exactly *company* but aren't they founded by the same person? One non-profit and the other profit but more or less by same people? (I might be getting my info wrong here). But I know what you mean and for this purpose it's only the paid hosted version, but personally I would be upset to use software that is being used in such a way, even if not affecting me directly.
@djlink well yeah, ideologically it sucks, and is part of the enshittification of everything. I think both the platform/business and the nonprofit that supports the open source project were founded by the same person. But the software is still open source / GNL, thankfully. I say "thankfully" because I started setting up a new wp site just 4 days ago, after considering a few SSGs like Hugo, so the news gave me a shock 
@djlink where do you host your site ? I was relying on wordpress dot com, currently unable to self host and I badly need a portfolio website. Any other service similar to wordpress or web host that provides a free tier

@kjv hosting it on github pages (free) at the moment. but I converted my entire site from wordpress to static pages Hugo to achieve this => https://www.david-amador.com/2024/01/converting-the-blog-from-wordpress-to-hugo/

@LegendaryRedfox yeah it's pretty cool, much faster also, just some work to convert any existing WP blog, but worth it
