Wow... Winamp is open source now?
https://github.com/WinampDesktop/winamp
I mean, I'm using Jellyfin these days but I can't say I'm not at least curious about this development. Hopefully the chiptune situation on linux can get better as a result. #linux #audio #opensource
edit: Turns out the licensing is still proprietary, which is a bummer. It's at least a step in the right direction for legacy software, though.
Github's homepage recommendations strike again. If it appears to-good-to-be-true, always double check the `LICENSE` entry to make sure you aren't being duped.
Oh boy, this looks like it's probably going to be a "developing story" at this rate.
@eoinoneill Not really, check the license it's using. It's more... 'source available'.
@RTheren Ahh you're right. That's definitely a bummer. So it's more like vivaldi than others. I'll edit my post to reflect this as well.
@eoinoneill no. Source-available is not open source. For nostalgic people making improvements and not owning your own changes, copyright belongs to them and you are not allowed to maintain a fork. Just asking for free coding slaves.
@fdelapena In fact, combing through the license, it's probably the worst of these I've seen thus far.
"No forks" on a project doesn't seem all that enforcable on Github, as noted by the "19 forks" on the repository already lmao.
Well, in due time they might eventually do the right thing and make the license more permissive. There might be legal reasons why they can't outright make the license fully permissive.
@eoinoneill They accidentally included the entire SHOUTCast source code, too. And then removed it. And then accidentally added it back again.
@eoinoneill
So they basically want free contributions from people around the world and sell that as their own. Because the license wants, that you grant all permissions to Winamp.
That is a real dick move
Luckily there is, besides nostalgy, no reason to use Winamp.
