Edit/update: it appears that Gregory's post is a misinterpretation. My bad, this hasn't been my experience with his posts before. So glad we can edit posts here.

Here is an explanation of the change: mastodon.social/@jik@federate.

Previous text for transparency:

Heads-up: new CDC data baseline change alters Covid wastewater reporting to artificially reduce community transmission levels. Going forward wastewater will look like the US has "no Covid" per its official (CDC) data.

@violetblue I am really very tired of the Just Make Shit Up timeline 😓

(To be clear, my ire here is directed at CDC)

@invicticide @violetblue

FFS. Let's just redefine "zero forest fires" to be the average of the country that was on fire last year. And while we're at it let's say that if the rain this year is the same as last year, it didn't rain at all.

@johntimaeus @invicticide @violetblue Doesn't look like that's what they're doing.. All they're saying is that when SARS-CoV-2 is at baseline endemic levels activity is 'minimal' the way they list it.

Which seems reasonable, you want the screening system to tell you when things are rising or something unusual is happening so you can respond to that. That is how we treat every other respiratory virus.

@Schouten_B @johntimaeus @invicticide @violetblue So we get to say, "COVID killed the same number of people as last year so all is good."

@meshaiman @johntimaeus @invicticide @violetblue That is how we treat every endemic infectious disease from RSV to TB (still 600 per year!). So yeah. Kind of.

@invicticide @violetblue Like a lot of gutted three-letter organizations, I think it’s unfair — and inaccurate — to blame the organization that exists in the shadow of its former self. If anything it helps the goals of the people who ripped money out and stuffed their own apparatchiks in.

Like an entire Russian democracy, the overthrow works a lot better if you leave the statues up. But why pick on Russia when it’s a well-worn path for quite a few Eastern European states, of the past and present too.
