I just remembered the NFT hype was only three years ago, and has already fallen into complete obscurity.

This in turn made me remember a Razem National Council session back in 2019 (I think), where we were discussing self-driving cars as a potential future challenge to employees (particularly lorry drivers). That one's fallen into obscurity. too. No one's waiting for self-driving cars anymore.

The "AI" hype is in its second year now...

@jzillw The last revolutionary and disrupting tech I can remember that actually became established was BlueRay.

Which is exactly like DVD as users are concerned, and fully backwards compatible. Just doing an identical job more efficiently.

@yora Come to think of it, Unity3D, Unreal Engine 3, Steam, iPhone, Android, Twitter, and Facebook all happened within the same 3-year span (2005-2008). Not all of these things were ultimately good, but each of them changed a lot in its respective field.

@yora @jzillw robot vacuums. The most revolutionarily useful idea in the last years, if you ask me.

But other than that, yeah, we're kinda stuck. There are SSD's, they're like HDD's but somewhat better. There's also this revolutionary idea of flat rate public transportation, but it's only here in Germany. 3d printers are kinda good but only for their own use cases. mRNA vaccines.

I guess fascism is a thing nowadays, but that's neither new nor useful.

Not much innovation these days, huh?

@Igigog @jzillw Oh yeah, 3D printing is actually new and it's now a thing.
The only thing it is disrupting is probably the toy soldier industry, but it does free a niche hobby from the grip of a few monopolists.

@yora @Igigog 3D printing is useful whenever you need a small custom-made piece of plastic. This includes spare parts (for drones, for example, which these days is a military application), but also props (for e.g. LARPs and board games).

@jzillw Can't have pump and dump without the dump phase, here's hoping that it happens soon, again.

@jzillw are we still putting things on the Blockchain?

@jzillw This is a topic really worth discussing! We should meet up in the Metaverse and... oh, wait...

@kwramm The real metaverse was the strangers we got into pointless arguments with along the way.
