@skillissues@mastodon.world @mcc If you try to interact with someone from a different server you have to do stupid stuff like copy paste their name into search instead of just clicking follow or like or whatever. If you try to change servers you have to manually copy your follows (since only followers are auto-transferred). Mastodon has a long way to go on user experience and basic convenience.

@skillissues@mastodon.world @mcc Also as far as joining: having to choose a server and how to choose one is completely foreign concept to people used to birdsite etc and very poorly explained, the range of suggested servers is incomplete, no clear way to tell which is right for you, and so most people just throw their hands up and go for the already overloaded default social server or any random server and have a bad experience.

@ninjadodo @skillissues the thing I feel needs to be better addressed is the problem of, you pick a server, it's right for you, then five months later it shuts down

@mcc @skillissues@mastodon.world Yeah, that is also a major problem. Mastodon profiles need to be made way more portable than they are currently and there should be a backup in case your server shuts down without enough time to move elsewhere (or like if you just happened to be away and missed it).

It should be fully seamless for the user. Choose a new server and go. Having to re-add all your follows by hand or by importing a spreadsheet is not good enough.

@mcc Maybe a good backup format would be that you can check an option or something (maybe on by default) that a server will email you a zip file of your data before it shuts down, so you can import it on a new server if you're too late to do a regular transfer.

The other key thing is transferring accounts must also include all your old posts. Losing your history every time you (are forced to) switch servers is no good either.
