I'm not sure there is an actual link if I'm honest. I suspect ages, colour and sex are much bigger determinants. I'm asking myself, would I follow someone who looks like me, and not really liking the answer

Neither. I read your profile and any pinned post(s). Pro tip: Describing your avatar and header in your bio is a plus.
Then, I look at the numbers.
- Posts: If you are asking to follow me and you have zero posts, I'm tapping the [Deny] button.
- Followers: It's less the quantity than the proportion between how many are folllowing and how many are followed. Taking into account the join date.
- Following: If this number is really large, you may be a bot. Again, accounting for your join date. If you've only been around for a minute, and you are following thousands, you don't need to also follow me.
