April 3rd, 12pm-1pm Eastern (UTC -4): "Understanding AI: What it Can and Cannot Do", an online author event featuring Arvind Narayanan and Sayash Kapoor, authors of "AI Snake Oil: What Artificial Intelligence Can Do, What It Can’t Do and How to Tell the Difference".

Supported by the #Baltimore County Public Library.

(The authors of this book are a computer science professor and graduate student at Princeton I've already read the book & liked it, though I think the authors go too easy on the large social-media sites & their inability to moderate effectively. They argue that predictive AI is largely a failure and faces inherent limits, and AI content moderation can't keep up with users, but generative AI is more likely to be useful, especially when it's overseen or verified by a human. They also call for judicious regulation, but of course we're not going to get any of *that*... well, maybe in the EU.)

It’s a happy birthday to the one and only Bryan Vana today.

Snack Dad, Aries, Self-declared short king, a wizard of cocktail menus, surprise care packages, the most thoughtful of planning shared activities, the one that dreams harder for you than you do for yourself.

This series of portraits come from this December. Bryan, like others, were delighted (perhaps a bit determined to show me a good time given where I was emotionally at the time) to have me for the holidays.

“All I couldn’t get you was snow” he said earlier on that Friday.

an hour later I looked up from petting Sam & Leo to realize it had started snowing. I ran down the stairs to see proof before running back up the stairs like a kid saying he got me snow. There’s enough distance in the third picture a neighbor snapped so you don’t see my misty eyes alongside my smile.

To someone that has always made me feel like sharing existence is the most meaningful thing in the world with a undertone of “you’re welcome, motherfucker” because they know the right about of salt makes existence more flavorful, highlights the sweetness. Let people know you love how they love you.
