One of the favourite lessons I've learned from my reading of popular #biology reporting is that there are no provisional or transitional species. Every single population that's ever lived on this planet looked like that because it was pretty good for an ecological niche at that time. Archaeopteryx was not a weird transitional being or a false start. It was an almost perfect archaeopteryx that must be judged on its own merit. There has never been a better archaeopteryx since then.

Whether anything ever lived on Mars is unknown. And the present environment, with harsh temperatures, intense radiation, and a sparse atmosphere, isn’t exactly propitious for life. Despite the red planet’s brutality, lichens that inhabit some of the harshest environments on Earth could possibly survive there. arstechnica.com/science/2025/0

Demand for tiny plants is driving a poaching crisis in southern Africa, where criminal networks have been digging up these rare finds by the millions. AtlasObscura.com has more from the thinly populated region that ecologists call the Succulent Karoo biome, a desert that is bursting with biodiversity:

ELOVL2's Role in Immune Aging and Lipid Metabolism

Summary: A recent study in
GeroScience highlights the link between lipid metabolism and immune aging, focusing on ELOVL2's role in diminishing immune function with age. This enzyme's decline disrupts B cell development, stressing the need for strategies to counteract aging effects on immunity.
