I regularly heard my friends use (仆街) puk gai as an insult, but I never looked into its etymological origins that mean "I hope you keel over and die on the street, with no family or loved ones around you, abandoned by society as just another corpse."

Watching "Interior Chinatown", it's a series about a Chinese waiter who gets involved in a police case. It's a comedy. I am enjoying it

My partner always tells me he wants to speak Cantonese to our future kid because he's sad the language is dying. I agreed, but said I will speak Drents in turn.
So I guess our future kid will learn #Cantonese and #Drents at home, and #Dutch outside. We'll see how that goes. We know many others who do this with 2 #languages which works well, kids learn languages easy. So we have good hopes for 3.

This book I'm reading has a Punjabi-#Malaysian character living in #KL who can understand #Cantonese.

I managed two interactions in Cantonese. I am not a confident speaker.
I was able to ask staff where the boxes of Po Erh tea was kept, and understood the response.
Another customer asked, in Cantonese, if I could mind her trolley in the check out queue, while she grabbed a box of noodles.
I understood her and told her that was fine.
I nearly joked she could get a box for me, too, but she might have taken me seriously. The words were there, but not used.
In front of the local paper of San Francisco's Chinatown Chinese read news of the surrender of Canton to the Japanese. Most of San Francisco's Chinese are Cantonese

The Mozilla #CommonVoice #dataset v20 was released yesterday - the largest open #speech dataset in the world. My #dataviz, linked below, shows a continuation of patterns seen for some years now:
There's more data collected for #Catalan (ca) than for #English (en) - testament to the independence and language reclamation efforts in Catalunya. Language and cultural transmission are deeply intertwined.
Some of the newer #languages to Common Voice, like #Ligurian / #Genoese (lij) have contributions from mostly older speakers, which is unusual in comparison to the rest of the dataset. This may reflect the population that currently speak those languages - as many regional languages in Italy are in rapid decline.
Some languages such as Eastern Mari / Meadow Mari (mhr) - a #Uralic language spoken in the Mari-El Republic within Russia - have samples from predominantly female-identifying speakers, again contrasting to the rest of the dataset. Other languages here include #Cantonese (yue), #Georgian (ka), and #Kalenjin (kln).
A key part in the preparation of the Common Voice dataset is the validation of utterances to assure they match their written transcription - which requires at least two validations by separate speakers. Some newer languages to Common Voice, such as Erzya (myv) and Moksha (mdf), both Uralic languages, have nearly 100% validation.

Excellent news. I recently completed a six month online program with a Taiwanese language teacher in Kaohsiung. It was very good for me as I already read Chinese characters and speak Taiwanese as a heritage speaker. I constantly despaired that it would seem so insurmountable for someone to pick it up from scratch. Gotta check out the programs at Berkeley, close to home
