Today #TheDisciplesWay is reflecting on 2 verses: Ephesians 4:25, 31-32 and Colossians 3:14-15. Combined, these verses offer a radical call to action: telling us to put away bittterness, anger, wrath, noise, & lying, while putting on charity & peace. That sounds almost impossible in this day & age. Yet, as Rev. Stephen Smith reminds us, the height of the Roman Empire, when these epistles were written, was not that much different. One might even argue those days were more dangerous (& potentially fatal for #Christians ) than our own. That doesn’t make the call easier to hear or to practice. The call for peace, charity, mercy, & forgiveness, however, is not unique to these verses. So it is an important call to heed. Perhaps especially so right now when so many are struggling with hurt & anger. We need to focus on treating ourselves & each other with radical kindness. As Nadia Bolz Weber pointed out the call to share forgiveness with our enemies & ourselves is the worst #GoodNews ever

@tg9541 They get it from the “Atlas Shrugged” novels written by #Russian emigrée #AynRand (where the ‘hero’ is a character named John Galt). Her hyper-rationalist #Objectivist philosophy (#empathy is a sin) was perversely melded into the ethos of so-called fundamentalist #Christians already worshipping #prosperity in the #UnitedStates.

I saw an excellent essay on this #American phenomenon entitled “Who is #Jesus Galt?” that has since been ‘disappeared’. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Today is the first time I spotted a phrase to describe the 'Christian' Fundamentalist trying to take over the USA in Trump's wake.

Others may already have used it but this is the first time I've seen it.

Faux Right Christians

Works as they are not actually #christians

I do not subscribe to the view that all Christians are bad, or that religion is the cause of all wars. Reductive nonsense that comes out of the playground school of philosophy. I am not a christian but have some friends who are. One is about to retire from being a bishop.

My daughter got this as part of a children’s ministry this evening (from a different church than our parish—it’s supposed to look like the little flames that alighted on the disciples at Pentecost). Preaching good news to all creation? Gotta be honest, that reads to me like taking care of the environment, reducing our carbon output, treating #ClimateChange like the actual, real thing it is. This is something #Jesus commissioned His #Church to do. It’s past time more #Christians listened.

youtube.com/watch?v=oh3elQQ_9q I am not a fan of conspiracy theories. That said, the #EpiscopalChurch seems like an obvious target for #ChristianNationalists We are accepting, affirming, & are #AllAboutLove In other words, we are #Christians & strive to follow Jesus. Which is why I’m attending today’s #EpiscopalAdvocacyDay at my state #Legislature As #BishopBudde points out: it is #TimetobeBrave & #ActionsMatter #WordsMatter #WeMatter & we will not go quiet into the looming national night the current regime wants to force upon us

According to #TheDisciplesWay the #FourthWeekofLent is about #Service This is a tricky one. #Christianity is primarily about serving others, at least that’s what the gospels, including today’s lesson (Matthew 20:26b-28) tells us. It’s not something many of us, who call ourselves #Christians do very well. Instead of looking into the souls of others & celebrating the image of the Divine in them, we seem to be turning away from anyone who does not show us God exactly as we perceive God to be & we are totally willing to force everyone, including God, to be what we think He should be. The problem is: that’s not God, nor is it what we are called to be as Christians. Jesus changed the world by emptying himself for the sake of others. We, in contrast, are trying to hold onto everything we have & grab ever more. We will succeed in changing the world, but not in a good way, because we want to be at the center of everything. We have forgotten, or never learned, how to be selfless like God is.

In terms of theology, I’m a universalist (I believe that everyone *IS* saved by virtue of Jesus; to me this is the only logical conclusion to reading the gospels). Obviously, this is not the “conventional” view among #Christians at large. So I wonder the extent of the “conventional” view of salvation, rooted in “us” and “them” language, has informed the US policy on basically everyone? Is this just Puritanism’s chickens coming home to roost? 1/

To other #Christians, especially those who are #blind, are there any #accessible #Bible study tools or resources you'd recommend? One of my first assignments for #college at #ColoradoChristianUniversity is about fears relating to college, and I have to find Bible verses on fear. I've tried a few different websites like #BibleGateway and Youversion, but I'm having a hard time with the search functionality or there are #accessibility issues, so I'm wondering what tools others use.

It's time for my periodic reminder that #MAGA completely ignore the rather dire warning that #Jesus gave all #Christians in the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats which you can read in full in the link below.

I'm not here to disagree with your religion or lack thereof, only to call out the utter #hypocracy of the far right #Republicans falsely claiming to be doing God's work.

Meanwhile here's a paraphrase from a Pastor I respect.

Christians in Syria slaughtered in their homes

According to Asia News, a Vatican-affiliated news agency that reports on Christian communities, more than 800 people, including women, children and priests, were slaughtered in their homes solely because they were Christian.

However, according to the Iraqi Christian Foundation, the death toll is 1,800. It alleges that entire villages are being slaughtered.

"Trump's authoritarian ambitions are well in the open now. This speech was also given on the evening before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent in the Christian tradition. We note that Republican members of Congress, most of whom claim to be followers of Jesus, had advance copies of the speech and knew it was filled with lies, and yet none felt the conviction to stand up for the truth."

These foundational lies that inhabit the thinking of key sectors of Christianity in the US lead right to the chief liar pouring out lies last evening as two out and proud white Christian men stood behind him cheering and clapping as he lied and lied and lied.

And they lead right to the choice of more than half of white Christians to vote for that chief liar three times now, setting in motion so much cruelty for so many.
