@Thumptastic3 I know, it's terrible how they treated this poor lady, who was trying her best to comply, and had a really good attitude. Here is another one, from a week later, I suspect the police were targeting her, to meet their arrest quota for that day. youtube.com/watch?v=cKdJ5omz1N #racism #policebrutality #blm #defundthepolice

“There is a tendency among people to defer to a computer result, which is natural,” ... “But I think that if you’re integrating that kind of technology into a high stakes set of circumstances where there’s a massive power imbalance, it becomes very difficult to guard against that end result.”

Bain agrees: “Police are not trained to think. The analysts are not thinkers. The analyst goes by what information the technological equipment spits out. And the AI equipment is already biased from the beginning.”

“Torontonians should see this as a real threat,” says Beverly Bain of No Pride in Policing, an advocacy group focused on defunding Canadian police forces. “These machines are designed to target those who protest, including pro-Palestinian protesters. The idea is to weed those people out, to arrest them, and to punish them for protesting against genocide.”

@kimlockhartga @Hedgewizard That the US sends cops out for everything baffles the rest of the us, and is a reason for #DefundThePolice.

UK also has too many cops, but still less. We also have Antisocial Behaviour Officers and Trading Standards Officers and Noise Officers, and a whole plethora of other positions that aren't cops but have enforcement powers if they use proper channels. Bureaucratic yes, but better than Chad turns up and shoots your cousin 'cos she's having a mental health crisis.

"People [are] becoming more likely to lose touch with support services...losing essential items they need to get into housing...or to survive the elements (such as tents) and [are] still stuck on the streets..."

"[The police] did confiscate the tarp she was sheltering under as 'evidence,' making it harder for her to survive on the street." #fascism #defundthepolice

CalMatters · ‘Look, there’s nowhere else to go:’ Inside California’s crackdown on homeless campsLast year, California cities gained more power to ban homeless encampments. CalMatters dug into what that looks like in three cities.

I've been absorbed recently in how to answer "where do you stand, politically?". My position is, don't answer it. Derail the whole discussion into specific societal and socio-economic problems, and their proven solutions. Drug policy? Portuguese model. Sex work? New Zealand. Homelessness? Finland. Policing? Divest funds devoted to the previous three issues into public health and community-based strategies, rather than criminalization. Oh now you getting #DefundThePolice, eh?
