“Roadrunner” — A greater roadrunner, Death Valley National Park.

After more than two-and-a-half decades of visiting Death Valley National Park, you would think that I’d have see quite a few of these birds. But, no, this is the first time I have encountered a roadrunner in the park. Actually, there were two. I arrived at my campsite and was getting my gear out when a couple of them showed up to investigate my stuff…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2025/04/01/ro

Hiking Corona Arch Moab Utah

Corona Arch, one of Moab, Utah’s most stunning natural wonders, stands proudly against the rugged red rock landscape. This massive sandstone arch, with a span of 140 feet and a height of 105 feet, is often compared to the famous arches within Arches National Park—yet it remains a hidden gem, free from the crowds.

“The map of the world is drawn by travelers and nomads. Built into it are steps, nights and days, stations and encounters.” ― Jasna Horvat

A few years ago I set out to what turned out to be the most incredible trip along the silk road from the deserts of Jordan till the mega cities of China.
Through all countries and cultures I was humbled by the kindness and hospitality of the people and awestruck by the spectacular scenery of deserts and mountains. Thanks to each and every person I met along the way. I will be back.

10 Classic California Road Trips to Drive in Your Lifetime via Afar [Shared]

California is, hands down, one of the best places in the world for a road trip. It’s the third largest state in the USA, and its 164,000 square miles are packed with varied terrain highlighted by some 66 scenic byways. Along the 865 miles of coast, road-trippers will meander by remote beaches and sheer cliff vistas as well as lively urban beach communities, such as Santa Monica and Venice in Los Angeles or laid-back La Jolla in San Diego. Inland, rocky desert landscapes give way to rolling farmlands, and two-lane highways carve through quiet groves of towering sequoias before climbing into the high, rugged peaks of the 352 mountain ranges.

“Badlands, In Shadow” — Badlands formations in early morning shadows, Death Valley.

This is another is a series of photographs I made one morning at Zabriskie Point during my late February visit to Death Valley National Park. Previously I mentioned that I rarely photograph at this spot any more — after a couple of decades it takes some pretty special conditions to persuade me to join the crowd there. I stopped when pre-dawn clouds suggested the potential for a very colorful sunrise. Alas, that did not happen, but I did get some interesting light before the direct sunlight came to the formations at Zabriskie…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2025/03/26/ba
