Trump’s role model, Bill Clinton, crammed more than 30,000 Haitians there in the ‘90s, but in what the NYT referred to as “crude tent cities,” similar to the tent camps in Gaza’s ...

Gizmo (2003) (Gremlins by NECA)

The holiday season is upon us and I’m sure I’m not the only one with a list of must-see holiday movies that I’ve been checking off over the last month. In our house one of the season’s staples is 1984’s Gremlins, now celebrating its 40th year. Anyone that argues that Gremlins is not a Christmas movie must not have seen the film. The movie’s opening credits accompany shots of a […]

BallLev

One of my goofiest ideas is wheel-less rail. The trains don't have wheels.

Instead, they slide on U channel rails filled with steel balls. Each train car is guided by slightly concave bottom edges.

This allows the floor of the train to be very low, so you don't need raised platforms, and it eliminates bearings to reduce maintenance.

For propulsion, linear magnetic motors push the balls rearward (at half the speed of the train itself).

Transverse Overhead Electric Buses/Cars

"Transverse Overhead" is an alternative to overhead lines for charging buses and cars. Buses can be charged on the move, while cars are charged while stopped at an intersection.

The lines run across the street rather than parallel, so they have little visual impact. They can be strung across existing poles and/or buildings.

Motorless Water Drone

This motor-less water drone is a low cost alternative to a fishing bait boat, or just a way to observe fishes without disturbing them. There is no prop noise. There's nothing flying around in the air (as with an aerial drone or kite). You can stand or sit some distance from the water, so fish won't see you.

It's just a fish shaped body powered and controlled by a fishing line. You can use brief tugs to propel it away from you.

"Aeroramjet" is a counterintuitive concept opposite of aerobraking. An aeroramjet maneuver through Jupiter's upper atmosphere could accelerate you by 10km/s, resulting in a 35km/s interplanetary velocity thanks to the Oberth effect.

Your craft is pulled by a magsail, using a nozzle to spray inert propellant into the airstream. The resulting plasma pushes the magsail forward, accelerating you.

Fighter Kites vs Drone bombers

Fighter kites are being flown by protesters to take out drones bombing them with tear gas.

The rhythmic tugging maneuvers a fighter kite by timing the tugs with the rotation of the kite. Kite fighting is normally a recreational competition between kite flyers.

How fighter kites work

The design of a fighter kite inherently flies in circles, and you pull as the kite's "nose" is pointed in the direction you wish to fly.

Could one get good enough at steering a fighter kite to use it for kite sailing? I really like the idea of kite sailing by floating on my back like an otter, holding a paddle between my body and an arm as the keel, and pulling the string with my other hand to steer the kite.
