For all the talk about the trade between Canada and the US, there are only three #intercity passenger #rail #trains that travel between them, the Amtrak Maple Leaf between NYC and Toronto once per day, the Amtrak Adirondack between NYC and Montreal once per day, and the Amtrak Cascades between Eugene, OR, and Vancouver, BC, formerly six times per day, currently once per day (I think) due to premature corrosion failures of the trainsets causing them to be pulled from service.

One thing that a public-owned InterCity bus service would have the incentive to do - which investorised public transport services observably don't - is long term investment in vehicles;

* coaches powered by renewable energy

* for trips of more than a couple of hours, coaches with onboard toilets

* rooftop solar trickle-feeding a battery bank, connected to USB charging ports for every seat

In 1991, the publicly-owned InterCity bus network in Aotearoa was sold to a consortium of investor-owned coach companies. The rationale was that along with "deregulation" - reforms that made regulations more favourable to investor-owned operations - this would help to create a thriving competitive market for long distance coach services. Prices would go down, service quality would go up, queue the ticker tape parade.
