A decayed and splitting tree stump is completely covered in moss and lichen. However it is split in two sections, and each part has a completely different kind of moss on it. The core wood has more frond-like moss, while the bark has finer, hairier moss.

From Akaroa, Aotearoa

A rough-textured sheet of grey lichen with red-brown highlights, cracked and fissured like a dry river bed. There's a cluster of raised orange nodules that look like walnuts in the top left corner, while the right-hand side is dominated by a roughly circular sunken blue-grey flat depression spattered with black, grey, and red-brown flat spots.

I knew it would be a good day for #LichenSubscribe and it was! These are all fancy camera except the third, which is my phone camera.

A patch of Cladonia lichen on a wet log. It is mostly flat sea-green leafy bits, but there are some short little stalks tipped with orange (which I only noticed after looking at the photos!)

A wet stick encrusted with very pale blue-green lichen with a healthy profusion of warm brown apothecia. There is also a little patch of some chartreuse lichen and another that is very pale yellow-green and leafy, like lettuce. Wet orange oak leaves are in the background.

A fallen piece of bark on a carpet of oak leaves sports a fantastic rosette of seafoam-green lichen, mostly leafy but with frothy bits concentrated towards the centre.

A wet stick encrusted with various small greenish lichens and a growth of convoluted brown jelly fungus adorning the end, held up above a background of wet oak leaves.

Yellow wall lichen

Xanthoria parietina is a common and widespread lichen-forming fungus which grows in diverse habitats, including coastal rocks, urban walls, and tree bark(even in areas with high levels of air pollution and excess nitrogen). The lichen represents a symbiotic partnership between a fungus and green algae of the genus Trebouxia.

Golden Moonglow lichen (Dimelaena oreina) on a rock at the north shore of Lake Huron.

Lichens on a thick tree trunk

The photo shows part of a thick tree trunk with brown, coarse bark.
Many lichens grow on this bark, with two large dominant foliose lichens in the center.
The upper lichen, a Moondust Speckled Lichen (Punctelia caseana), has yellow-green, overlapping lobes covered with broken white patches of soralia*.
The lower lichen, a Star Rosette lichen (Physcia stellaris), has green lobes with black fruiting bodies (apothecia).
Grass and trees can be seen in the distance in the blurred background.

*Soralia are openings of the lobes where soredia are produced.
Soredia are small granules of fungal hyphae and algae for the reproduction of the lichen.
