Ok, guys...

I'm not sure I can quite express how bizarrely freeing and enjoyable this incredibly derpy little exercise was.

I'm definitely going to make a habit of drawing more, even though I really don't know how!

Because NoneHitWonder was right! The schlockiest napkin scrawl is better than the most sublime AI slop!

I was thinking about buying a used #Wacom tablet to draw on, because it would be fun to create #monochrome art in #G/IMP (or heck, even #MacPaint via emulation!!), but I think I'll just continue using my fountain pens, and add doodles to my dot-lined paper notebook.

Thanks to the following amazing people for inspiring me:

EDIT: Found, see reply!

Anyone know the origin/artist of this Ukiyo-e inspired Mac artwork? I found it in MacWorld Sept 1990 pg 330 in an article about Canvas 2.1.

Reverse image search just shows lots of Tumblr sites, but did give a somewhat pixel art version of it.

I cleaned up the image to try to make it 1:1 (there were duplicate rows/cols).

Operating Superstars intro — Phantom Piltdown

Phantom is the ghost of Macintosh System 5, the Classic Mac OS version that got skipped. She’s a silly prankster and never had a public debut but she was happy to help her teammates behind the scenes. She also pranked their rivals!

The bg has filters over it but the 1-bit black and white bg was made in #MacPaint

Character intro (Operating Superstars): Sumire represents Macintosh System 4 and takes cues from the Macintosh II and the SE. She is (one of) Misaki’s successors and her time in the limelight was ambitious.

She competed in home and education venues like Diana, Prima and Misaki did, but she also has advanced skills with animation, music and 3D modeling.

Her success helped pave the way for her later teammates to focus on multimedia skills. However her success came with some misfortune as more dangerous malware (i.e: Scores) would arise and cause havoc in The Orchard. She and her team adapted as combatants due to Diana’s several years of combat experience.

She is friendly and helpful but can be competitive and stubborn with a rebellious side; her stubbornness is a reference to how the Mac II had to begin in secret since Steve Jobs didn’t want an expandable color Mac, and development on it began only after Jobs was ousted from Apple.

Sumire’s style is very colorful, including all of the rainbow Apple logo colors since System 4 is the first Mac OS version to support color. Since System 4 can also run on compact Macs, she’s also skilled working with black and white.

The Mac II's expandable design was inspired by the Apple II so Diana is one of her inspirations, shown in the portrait.

The 3D background is inspired by the image that had Apple logos on a surface with glass balls reflecting them which was a demo to show the Mac II’s color capabilities.

These character drawings are made in Inkscape but I made the geometric background in Pattern Maker 2.0, a classic Mac app from 1987. I imported that background into Blender where I made the 3D renders, and I made the portrait of Sumire and Diana in #MacPaint!

Another character introduction for Operating Superstars! Misaki represents Macintosh System 3 and also takes some cues from the Macintosh Plus, which was released the same time.

She is an artist and continued the desktop publishing tradition Prima started for their original team but she is also an inventor. She is friendly, cheerful, has a talent for crafting various gadgets and is skilled at networking. Her psychic abilities are also a reference to AppleShare and she used them to handle various files.

The fan she carries with her is because is the Macintosh Plus was prone to overheating. She was a member of her original team for many years but is now a member of COSMOS.

This was mostly drawn in Inkscape with effects in Krita, but the 1-bit black and white background was made in #MacPaint!
