I'm curious to hear what others are #SelfHosting! Here's my current setup:

Hardware & OS

Infrastructure & Networking

Security & Monitoring

Authentication & Identity Management

  • Authelia (Docker): Just set this up for two-factor authentication and single sign-on. Seems to be working well so far!
  • LLDAP (Docker): Lightweight LDAP server for managing authentication. Also seems to be working pretty well!
    #AuthenticationTools #IdentityManagement

Productivity & Personal Tools

Notifications & Development Workflow

  • Notifications via: #Ntfy (Docker) and Zoho's ZeptoMail (#Zoho)
  • Development Environment: Mostly using VSCode connected to my server via Remote-SSH extension. #VSCodeRemote

Accessibility Focus ♿🖥️

Accessibility heavily influences my choices—I use a screen reader full-time (#ScreenReader), so I prioritize services usable without sight (#InclusiveDesign#DigitalAccessibility). Always open to discussing accessibility experiences or recommendations!

I've also experimented with:

  • Ollama (#Ollama): Not enough RAM on my Pi.
  • Habit trackers like Beaver Habit Tracker (#HabitTracking): Accessibility issues made it unusable for me.

I don't really have a media collection, so no Plex or Jellyfin here (#MediaServer)—but I'm always open to suggestions! I've gotten a bit addicted to exploring new self-hosted services! 😄

What's your setup like? Any cool services you'd recommend I try?

I'm not a very big recipe poster but all that cauliflower is almost exclusively for this Kung Pao cauliflower recipe, which is basically just egg-battered (or sub vegetarian) deep fried cauliflower bites with a reduced commercial chili sauce. I'm going to sub in the black hungarian peppers for the jalapenos because they are similar in heat but look awesome (and I ripen most of my jalapenos.)
For two people, we usually make a half batch of cauliflower with a 3/4 of the sauce, which we improvise heavily on anyway. Plus rice.

I started my #selfhosting journey this week :blobfoxcomfycomputer:

The first app I got up and running was #Mealie. I now have a tablet in my kitchen so I can search through and read my recipes with ease. Much better than the Google Drive folder I've been using for years!

Now I'm working on getting #Navidrome set up. I'm so excited to have a dedicated place to store my music and to have it be accessible from any device on my local network.

Next I need to find a decent way to share notes between all my devices. Not yet sure if this needs to be a dedicated app on my local server or if something like Obsidian + Syncthing is the way to go.

All this makes me want to get more involved in FOSS projects. I'm glad there are people out there that keep tech enjoyable and full of love ❤️

I installed Mealie in my homelab many months ago without much use but recently revisited it as the project has been getting steady updates. It’s pretty awesome now. The most important thing about this type of project is the ease with which one can import data. That’s where I’ve seen massive improvements. It’s really good now. Try the OpenAI integration. #mealie #selfhosted

mealie.ioMealie.ioA simple, fast, and easy way to create and share recipes.

I'm not usually a #recipe poster but I made these miso peanut butter cookies today and they are remarkably good. The only change was raw sugar instead of demerara. Definitely following the notes next time and swapping the miso and pb amounts though. These are distinctly "Miso peanut butter" and I'd rather have "Peanut Butter! miso" 😆

cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1020538-peanut-butter-miso-cookies it's paywalled but you know what to do. Or feed it to #mealie and extract it that way

Anyone using #Mealie and #HomeAssistant?
I've spent some time creating an integration that mirrors the shopping lists and also creates a read-only calendar of the meal plan. Beta so things may break but if anyone wants to try it feedback is most appreciated.

@genofire #Mealie sieht von den Import- und Bearbeitungsfunktionen schon gut aus; und es gibt auch einen Zeitstrahl. Was mir da fehlt:
- Mealie ist anscheinend für den "Heimgebrauch" gedacht, oder? Also: jede Familie hat eine eigene Mealie-Instanz. Oder gibt es öffentliche Mealie-Instanzen mit viele hunderten/tausenden Nutzern?
- es wär halt schön, wenn ich tatsächlich ein anderes Rezept "forken" könnte; und beim ursprünglichen Rezept sollten halt die Forks aufgelistet sein.

Recently here was a poll which recipe software people use. Even knowing that it has not the best (to be friendly) UI, I suggested #gourmand. I really like the importing from a URL feature (using the #recipe-scrapers library). And all other features are just enough for my needs.

Today I stumbled in #fdroid over a client for #mealie which raised my attention.

x mins later … Mealie.io runs here now in a container. All the functionality I have used/seen so far is really nice. It's worth to try.

Today's fun link is an addon for #Mealie, an awesome self-hosted recipe and meal-planning site. (mealie.io/)

This page will help you create a bookmarklet that tosses the current recipe tab straight into your Mealie, without having to cut and paste and so forth. It even lets you set or unset the edit and keyword buttons automatically. All it does is submit the import form using whatever account your browser is already using, so it does not need your password or anything.

Combine that with bots like
@TheRecipeExchange and you can just wander the #fedi harvesting interesting recipes to your Mealie with less effort than it takes to scroll past all the AI text bullshit or find the "jump to recipe" button.

The importer isn't perfect (I wish it did sections, and I need to dig into the API and see if I can auto-enable ingredient parsing) but it is pretty good.

And don't tell anyone, but it also bypasses most paywalls. So when you face a paywall, just click the bookmarklet, read the recipe (with description and header picture) on your Mealie instance, and then save or delete it as you like.

Pictured: A peek at our
#mealplan. The pizza is .. what it says, and we aren't sure how to feel about it. The kung pao chicken is the super tasty one I referenced earlier. (1.5 dried smoked habaneros is perfect. Don't start with 5. I can't stress that enough.) And the orzo recipe was unexpectedly great.

Published the second episode of The Self-Host Cast this morning, featuring an interview with Hayden Kotelman, the developer of #Mealie and #homebox.

Give it a listen and feel free to reach out with any feedback. Editing is still a bit of a grueling process, but I'm getting better and am aiming for at least an episode a month in 2024.
