When I stepped off the bus this afternoon, I was unexpectedly greeted by this typical example of Midcentury Modern architecture. It is bravely trying to age gracefully into this century. Stand strong, gray lady. Your finest days are behind you, but you are not yet due for the wrecking ball.

(NE Glisan St., Portland. Built in 1961.)

An apartment complex built in one of the several styles that we lump under the Midcentury Modern umbrella. It has three stories of apartments built over parking stalls at ground level. All of the apartments have balconies facing the street. The stairwells are covered by ornamental bricks that are painted either blue, yellow, or orange.

Here's another little #MidCenturyModern furniture project I finished recently. This chair was made by someone called Design Group, Inc, out of Lake Oswego, Oregon. I've not been able to find any info about the maker beyond this piece. But it's quite lovely. I especially like the joinery—each joint feels like a little minimalist composition. Built with quarter-sawn oak, with an oiled finish.

My contribution here was cleaning up several decades worth of grime and cigarette residue, stripping off the rotted original foam, and reupholstering. The fabric is nothing special, something I found a half bolt of at salvage, but it's a nice match for the color and energy of the chair, if not especially period-appropriate.

The seat is upholstered with a gold and brown geometric patterned fabric whose effect approaches that of a leopard print. It is pictured in front of a window with blinds down, on a lightly hued vintage oak floor. There is a potted plant and a small credenza behind.
