Midnight Monsters: A Startled Moontinkifer
Do not be afraid. Like many night creatures, they just wish to be left alone. These secretive beings often hide in the shadows, except when the moon is full and bright. The midnight moon is their time of wonder and if you happen to be in the right place at the right time, you just may witness some magical happenings. This particular midnight monster is called Moontinkifer and can be found high up in the Balkan mountain range on the border between Bulgaria and eastern Serbia . It was not easy getting to this destination, but I have found it worth the effort, expense and skinned knees. Legend says that if one is lucky enough to spot them during the day, they appear as drab, colorless creatures, almost invisible against the mountain landscape of rocks and boulders. They shine (literally) at night when they come out of their hiding places to dance. Moonlight causes a shimmering transformation from dull gray to a luminous rainbow colored glow! It is believed that the glimmer of incandescent color and magical movements is their way of attracting a mate. Otherwise, they appear to be quite shy, non-aggressive individuals, who unfortunately, startle easily.

The #Mars 🔴 Sample Return mission will be achieved by #human 👩‍🚀 missions to Mars. "Crew and cargo flights to the #ISS would be significantly reduced 📉. The station’s reduced research capacity would be focused on efforts critical to the #Moon and Mars exploration programs." arstechnica.com/space/2025/05/

The paper cleared it up - some end-points of lines had been mis-plotted, not just in latitude but also confusing east and west longitude. The paper allowed me to draw the lines correctly. They match the pattern of images too, as you would expect. Only these tracks were made, again testing for planetary use. And we actually have the altimetry - which we will see tomorrow.

I scanned this map at MIIGAiK in Moscow in 2001. It had been annotated with landing sites and other information (C-5 is Surveyor 5, P-8 is Ranger 8). The L-22 lines are altimetry tracks but 2 of them end about 30 deg. south. The orbit inclination would not allow that. Then my hosts found an obscure paper:

Tyuflin, Y. C. et al., 1976. Nekotorie resultat radioprofilirovaniya s avtomaticheskoi stantsii Luna-22. Kartografirovanie Lune i Planet, pp. 54-58. MIIGAiK, Moscow.

Titan Facts

Titan is Saturn's largest moon, and the only moon in our solar system known to have a substantial atmosphere. Titan is the only place besides Earth known to have liquids on its surface. It has clouds, rain, rivers, lakes and seas of liquid hydrocarbons like methane and ethane.

Introduction
Saturn's largest moon, Titan, is an icy world whose surface is completely obscured by a golden hazy atmosphere. Titan is the second largest moon in our solar system. Only Jupiter's moon Ganymede is larger, by just 2 percent. Titan is bigger than Earth's moon, and larger than even the planet Mercury.

This mammoth moon is the only moon in the solar system with a dense atmosphere, and it’s the only world besides Earth that has standing bodies of liquid, including rivers, lakes and seas, on its surface. Like Earth, Titan’s atmosphere is primarily nitrogen, plus a small amount of methane. It is the sole other place in the solar system known to have an earthlike cycle of liquids raining from clouds, flowing across its surface, filling lakes and seas, and evaporating back into the sky (akin to Earth’s water cycle). Titan is also thought to have a subsurface ocean of water.

Namesake
Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens discovered Titan on March 25, 1655.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christia
Huygens called his discovery "Luna Saturni," which is Latin for Saturn moon. The name Titan came from John Herschel, son of astronomer William Herschel. Titans are from Greek mythology.

Explanation:
Like Earth's moon, Saturn's largest moon Titan is locked in synchronous rotation with its planet. This mosaic of images recorded by the Cassini spacecraft in May of 2012 shows its anti-Saturn side, the side always facing away from the ringed gas giant. The only moon in the solar system with a dense atmosphere, Titan is the only solar system world besides Earth known to have standing bodies of liquid on its surface and an earthlike cycle of liquid rain and evaporation. Its high altitude layer of atmospheric haze is evident in the Cassini view of the 5,000 kilometer diameter moon over Saturn's rings and cloud tops. Near center is the dark dune-filled region known as Shangri-La. The Cassini-delivered Huygens probe rests below and left of center, after the most distant landing for a spacecraft from Earth.

:dogeparrot: SniffiVerse™ walkies Toot :annoyingdog:

Ello frens and fans of Arwen :verified_paw:

It's a warmer night, and we're out and about for walkies again. It's dry with 14°C at the moment. I'll open the back door of the house again when we're back home, as it was almost 23°C indoors and that was a bit much for Arwen... I already opened the upstairs windows some, so that I can hopefully ride my bike a bit, before I crash on the couch with my laptop to work on my journal blog post... 😊

Today should be a more relaxing day. I rode the seated bike for 25 minutes and I used the cross-trainer for 5. Couldn't use the massage chair as one had been taken already... So hopefully I can ride my bike a bit after walkies. The scale wasn't too unkind this morning, so that was nice.

I even got a snap of the moon again! Finally it was bright enough and it was "up" long enough for me to take a snap... 😊 I edited it a wee bit and I'll ask altbot for some help with it.

Hope that you're all having a good (start of the) weekend! :darkmodeparrot:

Catch you later folks!

From the comments:
"This is more than 25%. The last real budget was FY24, $24.875B. In 2025 buying power, that was $26.8B (inflation has been high). The proposed FY26 budget of $18.8B is a 29% reduction to a number that was already down a bunch since 2020."

Well, China and Russia are happy, I guess. Space is all theirs now. Pretty sure whatever over-inflated junk muskrat wants to make will not compete.

"White House budget seeks to end SLS, Orion, and Lunar Gateway programs" by @arstechnica / @sciguyspace - The high cost of #SLS rockets, derided as the Senate Launch System and built under Cold War style cost-plus contracts, have always been a lightning rod for cancellation whenever the #NASA budget came under pressure. Unclear whether Artemis crew flights will end after Artemis 3 landing, or reorganize under the Artemis banner with commercial spacecraft. arstechnica.com/space/2025/05/ #Artemis #Moon🌒

Under #Trump’s proposed #budget, #NASA would largely become the National #Moon & #Mars Administration, with an almost singular focus on getting astronauts to those 2 destinations.

The Trump admin proposes a budget of $18.8B for NASA, down 24% from $24.8B in the current budget year. The plan would introduce $1B in new investments for Mars, which would aim to fulfill Trump’s [#Musk’s] pledge during his address to #Congress to “plant a flag” on Mars.
