This pediatrician was studying familes facing #FoodInsecurity and #housing insecurity. #NIH just cancelled his grant, claiming “Research programs based primarily on artificial and non-scientific categories, including amorphous #equity objectives, are antithetical to the scientific inquiry." STAT · The NIH called my health equity research ‘antithetical to scientific inquiry’The NIH canceled Logan Beyer’s health equity research, saying it was “antithetical to scientific research.” That’s completely wrong, she writes.

"Thousands of grants, including many at public universities and on topics as politically benign as Alzheimer’s, have been caught in what critics say is an unprecedented slowdown of the American research system that is threatening to upend universities and halt progress toward medical innovations, treatments and cures."

“If the situation is not addressed, “pretty soon, the department will be completely open to external actors to get at the largest databases in the world that have all of our public health information in them, our sensitive drug testing clinical trial information at the #NIH or #FDA or different organizations’ mental health records,” the source claims…”

Heading to SynBioBeta to be on a panel about art & science. These conferences offer an intriguing mix of science, policy, futurism, industry boosterism & the occasional sideshow from outer space.

All across the USA, anti-scientific mobs are looking for research laboratories to vandalize and scientific careers to foreclose.

Yet astounding advances in biological science keep happening despite everything.

“Scientists forced to perform humiliating new job amid Trump cuts.”

I wish that this article was from the Onion, but it’s actually news from the Daily Mail, that’s unfortunately the awful truth about the possible fate of scientists who were fired by the Trump admin by way of Musk’s DOGE.

It’s Trump who should be made to perform humiliating jobs in prison, for the rest of his life.

Update. "Judge permanently blocks #NIH’s plan to cap funding, setting up appeals battle"
highereddive.com/news/judge-pe

"Research #universities won an extended reprieve Friday when a federal judge permanently barred the National Institutes of Health from capping funding for indirect research costs at a 15% rate, a move that would cost institutions billions a year. US District Judge Angel Kelley ruled NIH had violated federal statute, was “arbitrary and capricious” in creating the cap, failed to follow rulemaking procedures when doing so and violated constitutional prohibitions on applying new rules retroactively."

The NIH will surely appeal.

A #DOGE engineer removed fed officials’ permissions to post to Grants.gov w/o telling them. Now decisions affecting $Bs in grant opportunities are set to flow through a DOGE-controlled mailbox.

The Trump admin has taken multiple steps to delay or halt fed grants, e.g. delaying $Bs in research grants issued by agencies such as the #NIH, freezing or term grants to higher-EDU insts...

Update. "More Than $110 Million in #NIH Grants to #Harvard, Affiliated Hospitals Terminated Since Late February"
thecrimson.com/article/2025/4/

"All of the grants were terminated before the #Trump administration announced a $9 billion review of funding to Harvard and affiliated health care centers. At least four grants to Harvard-affiliated scholars — specifically those related to research on Covid-19 — have since been temporarily reinstated as the White House battles court challenges. The affected projects had more than $43 million in undisbursed funds at the time of cancellation…All of the canceled projects prominently featured themes of #gender and #sexualidentity, #Covid-19 and its #vaccine, or health disparities."
