Skype will shut down soon. I wanted an open source alternative so I tried Galene (https://galene.org/) multiple times to call my dad and it works very well.

For now, I spawn a disposable instance on OVHcloud using OpenTofu and the OpenStack provider. Then I configure the software using Ansible. The code is available here https://git.riou.xyz/jriou/galene-cloud.

Tomorrow, I would like to only host a TURN server on my VPS and self-host galene on my homelab.

I removed, OVH from my list of recommended providers.

Why?

OVH previously only resold servers in the United States, with their datacenters and business offices overseas in France. Today, OVH is under direct Us Jurisdiction, even redirecting their traffic to their American site us.ovhcloud.com and their terms of services outline an address in the USA, plus they're hiring for their own datacenter in the USA, and lastly in the footer of the website it now reads, "Copyright ©2025 OVH US LLC"

Euh #OVH m'a suspendu mon nom de domaine sans prévenir (j'ai reçu aucune des relances mentionnées) et je peux plus accéder à mon compte, et je ne reçois pas les emails de “mot de passe oublié”, c'est bizarre non ?

J'avais souscris y a 2 mois un domaine .ovh pour expérimenter, je m'attendais à ce que ça dure 1 an...

My #Hetzner exit plan is in motion. Two lesser #OVHcloud instances come in at a decent price, leaving budget for backup storage as well. I had one big fat server running #Linux with a #FreeBSD VM (would have preferred the other way around, but at some point #Hetzner had servers incompatible w/ #FreeBSD).

Now I have one server with #FreeBSD and one with #Linux.

Slowly moving over all services, and reducing my #IPv4 dependence while at it.

Still looking for a decent backup storage provider.

I'm planning on switching to #OVH for server hosting and I was wondering what the general consensus on it was. I heard there were some issues that some have reported based on customer support not being that helpful, but I also heard that it was the most used #VPS provider for federated services after #Hetzner , which I won't use due to the whole thing with threatening to take down a server due to a false report last year.

@european_alternatives I had a very bad experience following your recommendations for OVHcloud https://european-alternatives.eu/product/ovh-cloud-domains They don't provide free email for all domains. It appears like all domains include free email, but in reality only if you buy hosting also from them they give free email.

So please remove the free email mention from your listing. I ended up having to buy another email hosting since I did not want to lose my emails after I transferred my domain from gandi.net #OVH #OVHcloud

Il me semble bien que #DuckDuckGo a toujours été très clair sur son fonctionnement.
