wes.copernicus.orgGlauert's optimum rotor disk revisited – a calculus of variations solution and exact integrals for thrust and bending moment coefficientsAbstract. The present work is an amendment to Glauert's optimum rotor disk solution for the maximum power coefficient, CPmax, as a function of tip speed ratio, λ. First, an alternate mathematical approach is pursued towards the optimization problem by means of calculus of variations. Secondly, analytical solutions for thrust and bending moment coefficients, CT and CBe, are derived, where an interesting characteristic is revealed pertaining to their asymptotic behavior for λ→∞. In addition, the limit case of the non-rotating actuator disk for λ→0 is shown for all three performance coefficients by repeated use of L'Hôpital's theorem, and its validity is discussed in the context of other works since Glauert.

[A #Trump admin ofcl said]…cuts would be made to federal funding that #Penn receives from #DOD & #HHS.

…On Feb 6, the #UnitedStates Dept of #Education launched an investigation into Penn for Title IX violations for allowing 2022 College graduate & #transgender woman Lia Thomas to represent Penn women’s swimming & diving during the 2021-22 NCAA swimming season. Shortly after, the NCAA changed its policy to align w/the order.

#Trump admin freezes $175 million in federal funding to #Penn

"This is just a taste of what could be coming down the pipe for Penn, one snr Trump admin ofcl told FauxNews.

“The official said that the decision to cut funding was made because Penn ‘infamously permitted a male to compete on its women’s swimming team.’”

This is straight up illegal — a violation of Title VI of the #CivilRights Act & the Administrative Procedure Act.

It’s not the same without my friend Reed Gustow, who passed at the end of August. But BarCamp Philly has been going strong for 15 years.

I love this unconference, because where else can you learn about knitting and AI at the same event. LOL

I’ve only missed three. Two from before I knew about it and one when my, now 11 year old son, was born.

I love how many new people are experiencing BarCamp Philly for the first time this year and how inclusive the whole community is.

Here’s to many more!

I think I'm a terrible person. Earth Day is not a big thing for me.

When I hear Earth Day, it brings to mind an episode of the old Penn & Teller Bullshit! TV show, where they debunked drinking bottled water.

I still check where bottled water comes from, if I absolutely need to buy a bottle, just out of curiosity. We're big on tap water . . .

So many plastic bottles. So bad for the environment.

11 months earlier, there was no campaign to remove a white male University President on #plagiarism: social.coop/@eric/109893277642

"For this campaign to work, they needed mainstream media to support them. And the media obliged. All in all, it has been a very successful couple of weeks for bad-faith attacks on higher education. In just 10 days, the New York Times published 13 pieces about the President of one university in the aftermath of both the hearings and the plagiarism allegations.

"Is that a lot? To provide a comparison, we would need a benchmark of a university president accused of academic misconduct at a very prestigious institution. As it turns out, Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne faced more serious accusations of academic misconduct involving data manipulation. A formal investigation was announced in November of 2022, and he was forced to resign in July of 2023. So, how many articles did the Times write about the topic prior to his resignation? Zero. And zero is probably the right number, because this is not national news until an actual resignation. But that is not the standard being applied to Gay, because the campaign is not about academic misconduct."
