Let's #workTogether !

No job description yet, but, hear me out:

I've recently left #RedHat, to do something I feel is more meaningful: help build a better home for #OpenSource: @radicle

We're now looking for someone with experience in the #frontend world and a #UserExperience focus and #product builder mindset to join my team!

( A thread 🧵👇 )

Boosts, to help this get to the right person without an algorithm in the way, are highly appreciated!

The State of #OpenSource in #2025? Honestly, it's a mess but you knew that already
Good news: everyone's using it. Bad news: have you seen how they're using it?
#RedHat seems to have alienated a lot of people by killing #CentOS – not merely from its own offerings but potentially from the greater family of distributions. Although #RHEL is still significant, survey did not show an obvious trend towards Alma, or Rocky, or CentOS Stream – let alone a direct move to RHEL.

#Perl DBD::mysql and the corresponding #RHEL package have always been #MariaDB compatible, i.e., you could install MariaDB and DBD::mysql RPMs together.
But the new DBD::mysql package in #CentOS stream can no longer be installed with MariaDB.
I filed a bug (issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-) and #RedHat said it's not supposed to work. Except it always has.
What do you think?
(Note if it doesn't work then all Perl scripts on the host that use DBD::mysql must be modified to use DBD::MariaDB instead.)

My name is Karl and this is my #introduction. I've just joined courtesy of installing #Vivaldi browser and finding a pointer to here. With everything that's going on in the world I am less inclined to be connected to Facebook, Instagram and the like, or to share my data so widely. I've reduced my exposure... Deleting other social media apps - although not *everything* yet - Starting here; Setting up a #blog at gentlemenjoyfully.com (that name was the random name given to my Gravatar homepage). I just liked it and thought perhaps it could inspire a way of looking at things, so I adopted it for my blog page.

I work in technical sales for #RedHat an IT #Software company, and in my spare time I like to play and sing. I play #fiddle, #guitar(s) and accordion.. though mostly fiddle. I also love #dogs, and #walking in the #countryside, and #ClassicCars and #Motorcycles. To stay #healthy I like #running, #walking and doing #yoga mostly.

OK so, I think I got confused on the #fedora website. Turns out I downloaded #Fedora42 Plasma KDE. Which has worked out well for the user.

Although, a bit fussy in the user interface. I would have preferred Gnome.

But on review, it looks like I was confused by the word "Workstation". I ignored that option because I didn't want some RedHat official thing for offices.

Hiring for Flatpak Automation

The desktop team in Red Hat has another open position. We’re looking for someone to work on Flatpak automation, for someone who enjoys working on infrastructure. Although the job description states 2+ years of experience, it’s suitable for juniors. Formal experience can be replaced by relevant open source contributions. Being onsite in Brno, Czech Republic is preferred, but not required. We’re open to hiring good candidates elsewhere, too.

If you’d like to know more about the job before formally applying, don’t hesitate to contact me on Mastodon, Signal, Matrix (@eischmann at fedora.im), or email.

I use a Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9 system as a cloud based development workstation.

The system is running on Proxmox VE and is running Apache Guacamole (guacamole.apache.org) as a clientless HTML5 remote access gateway.

I can simply access the system from any HTML5 capable web-browser and have my desktop with all the tools, I need to do some work.

(Of course, for security reasons, this is behind a strong MFA authentication)

#bash has a bunch of built-in shortcuts and key commands that help you get around the #linux command line. Some may be a little antiquated , but others are REALLY useful.

Today, on Into the Terminal, we're going to show you some of these shortcuts, come join us! Maybe you'll learn something new! We'll be live in a bout 20 minutes!
