This cute little guy is from the original Super Mario Bros. His name is Goomba in English and Kuribō in Japanese.

The game takes place in a mushroom kingdom, so he was modeled after Shiitakes. But one developer thought he resembled a chestnut, and called him Kuribō. This means “chestnut boy” in Japanese.

There’s more to the story, but that’s the gist of his name duality.

Finished Super Mario Bros Wonder the other day. It's definitely an evolution of New Super Mario Bros which draws extensively on Super Mario Bros 3, with a good helping of Super Mario Bros 2. Easy to beat, but super-hard to clear. Wonder Flowers are a cool idea that makes everything even more druggy, but the real star of the show is the Elephant Fruit, which turns you into an elephant.
