Gaza farmers fight to revive agriculture after 15 months of war

The city of Beit Lahiya in the north of Gaza once supplied 60 percent of fruits and vegetables to the Strip.

It also exported strawberries to the occupied West Bank, Israel and Europe. But 15 months of Israel’s war have left its farmland in ruins.

Now, farmers attempting to reclaim their fields are facing major challenges.

Tonnes of microplastics infiltrate Australia’s agricultural soils each year
How microplastics affects soil and food health

"We found every kilogram of compost contains between 1,500 and 16,000 microplastic particles. In weight, this equates to between 7 and 760 milligrams of microplastics per kilogram of compost. "

"In Australia, about 26% of compost produced at organic waste processing facilities is used in agriculture. So, we estimate that between 2.7 and 206 tonnes of microplastics is being transported to Australian agricultural land from compost each year."

"The absence of clear guidelines leaves composting facilities, waste processors, and end users vulnerable to unintended plastic pollution."

#UniversityOfMaine’s #USDA funding restored

by WABI News Desk
Published: Mar. 12, 2025 at 9:05 PM EDT

Maine (WABI) - "Senator #SusanCollins announced Wednesday that the University of Maine’s funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture has been restored.

"On Monday the University received notice that funding from the USDA was paused.

"According to UMS, the notice stated the pause was temporary while the USDA evaluated potential follow-up actions related to prospective Title VI (6) or Title IX (9) violations.

"Collins released at statement saying:

'This USDA funding is critically important not only to the University of Maine, but to our farmers and loggers, as well as to the many people who work in #Maine’s #agriculture, #aquaculture, and #forestry industries. Now that funding has been restored, the work that the University does in partnership with the many people and communities who depend on these programs can continue.'"

I'd not even seen the sled in the forest before, a visitor pointed it out. Slightly overgrown!

After using that (unsuccessfully) on the concrete beams, I used the rest of the twilight to pull these rollers out of the forest, too. Seemed like a good idea to do this before the meadow starts sprouting again.

They have holes for filling with water ballast. Heck knows where the plugs for them are though. Probably disintegrated.

Update. "US science rues ongoing demotion of research under President Trump"
physicsworld.com/a/us-science-

"In his first cabinet meeting on 26 February, #Trump suggested that officials “use scalpels” when trimming their departments’ spending and personnel – rather than #Musk’s figurative chainsaw. But bosses at the Environmental Protection Agency (#EPA) still plan to cut its budget by about two-thirds…The White House’s attack on #climate science goes beyond just the EPA. In January, the US Department of #Agriculture removed almost all data on climate change from its website…The Trump administration has also barred #NASA’s now former chief scientist Katherine Calvin and members of the State Department from travelling to China for a planning meeting of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Meanwhile, in a speech to African energy ministers in Washington on 7 March, US energy secretary Chris Wright claimed that coal has “transformed our world and made it better”, adding that climate change, while real, is not on his list of the world’s top 10 problems."
