I think article is a little confusing. It seems to question the #ancientorigins of #psychedelicuse, but the presented evidences are quite weak.

If you take #Ayahuasca, for example, no one has ever traced the knowledge source on the mixture of plants needed for the brew to be effective in the human body. How can someone suggest it was made up for tourists? You need a different level of cognition to be aware of the results of the dialogue between the alkalloids of two different plants.

'Brabec de Mori argues that ayahuasca diffused through the Peruvian Amazon in the past 300 years. It is likely older among Tukanoan peoples further north, who, he suspects, transmitted the practice to populations missionised early in the lowlands. Yet in the regions most frequented by tourists, it seems to be a relative novelty. Brabec de Mori isn’t the first to make the argument – the anthropologist Peter Gow proposed something similar in 1994 – but he, more than anyone else, has found the anthropological data to support it.'

Same has happened to the rarer varieties of #Ayahuasca vine in Peru.

All the while we could produce mescaline, 5-meo-dmt, dmt & tetrahydroharmine synthetically, leaving these fragile ecologies alone.

But then we have the fucking ’natural health’ wanna-be white ”shamans” taking none of it, because it’s not ”spiritual”.

@br00t4c Hope the mystery gets solved. Sounds like an allergic reaction.

I have to wonder if the journalist is confusing frogs with toads. If they are playing with #ayahuasca, it seems more likely that they would be playing with toads because it is a Bufo Alvarious toad that has the DMT in their secretions.

One of my strongest #ActuallyAutistic traits for most of my life has been being literal. I took people for their word when they said who they were. I consumed culture without noticing much subtext (unless someone pointed it out).

After #Ayahuasca, this changed. I could be rewatching a show and suddenly see the meta-layers. During this period, I could at times feel how new space was unfolding in my mind.

I've been pondering explanations for this, and I think that a plausible theory is …
