The cloud cover has not broken around San Francisco as planned. A weak, but persistent low level eddy (circular feature) kept the flow firmly from the moist southwest today, drenching us in cloud cover. A sure sign of weak large scale flow! #CAwx
NWS Sacramento is decreasing their services due to staff shortages. Some highlights:
- No more answering phones
- Limited overnight staffing
- Only one forecast discussion per day
- Limited social media posts
- Advisories mainly being posted/updated during the day
California weather service office will no longer answer public phone calls amid staffing cuts
The National Weather Service office in Sacramento, which serves as a hub in California and forecasts weather in areas including Redding, Modesto, Vallejo and the Sierra Nevada, has been forced to cut down its operations and services due to “critically reduced staffing,” triggered by Department of Government Efficiency layoffs.
The weather service office sent an email to partners Wednesday afternoon detailing major changes. The shifts include:
Public phone calls will no longer be answered
Written forecasts, including fire weather forecasts, will only be published once per day, rather than twice per day
Staffing levels will be routinely reduced during overnight shifts, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Social media channels will be monitored less frequently
The office plans to remain fully staffed during extreme weather events. #weather #STO #NWS #CAwx

A weak cut-off low pressure system near SoCal will move inland Thu/Fri, bringing scattered mainly mountain showers in Southern Sierra and SoCal. A few thunderstorms are possible, and there might even be some more isolated showers across the SoCal coastal plain (inc. LA). #CAwx

Two waves of light precipitations are expected in the next few days. The first wave will bring scattered showers tonight through Thursday morning across the coastal basin but focused mainly in San Diego County. The second wave will bring scattered showers and high elevation mountain snow Thursday evening through early Friday, with isolated afternoon showers possible inland. Totals are generally expected to remain b

Two quick systems will sweep through Southern California late week. The first system could bring some light intermittent rain across the coastal basin Thursday morning. The second system could bring some additional periods of light rain and high elevation mountain snow late Thursday through early Friday, with isolated afternoon showers possible inland. There still remains uncertainty on the totals from the systems

Minor risk of heat related impacts for those who are sensitive to heat, especially those without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration.
This risk is greatest for inland portions of the Bay Area and Central Coast.
Warmest conditions during the late morning to early evening hours.

There’s up to a 20% chance for thunderstorms across the region Wednesday. Isolated lightning strikes are the primary hazard. Small hail and gusty winds are also possible. Stay weather aware and check back for updates. Remember: when thunder roars go indoors and see a flash, dash inside!
More notes from the live chat by Weather West (Dr. Daniel Swain) on the chaos being wrought upon the National Weather Service:
Dept of Commerce terminated an agreement with a university regarding weather/climate research stated "this cooperative agreement promotes exaggerated climate threats...promoting anxiety..."
A doc from the White House states that the proposed close the NOAA office that does and funds research on weather and oceanographic. NASA is targeted for larger cuts regarding planetary research. Many cooperative research centers will be closed. Proposed is the canceling the partnership between NASA and NOAA, which would end weather satellite updates.
A list of notes on the chaos in the NOAA from the Live Chat by Weather West (Dr. Daniel Swain):
Staff in the Sacramento NWS office is critically understaffed. Monterey office has lost people and are understaffed. Weather balloons to gather vital info twice a day are not being launched due to understaffing, which will degrade weather forecasting. In Canduca (sp?) Kentucky the building of the weather office cannot pay for backed up toilets and all maintenance has been fired. Plus, it forced staff to use an outside porta potty in an active hurricane warning. Hazardous wastes trained staff have been fired and now offices have been shut down due to no one being able to safely dispose of the waste. Some staff have been fired 3x with the firings and rehiring. US global change research program on observed and expected impact of climate change report--the company doing the report were fired, even though it was congressionally mandated.

Dense Fog Advisory is now in effect through 10 AM for Monterey Bay Coast and San Francisco Peninsula Coast, including Monterey Bay. Visibilities will be less than one half mile at times. Low visibility could make driving conditions and navigating hazardous.

Confidence is slowly increasing in some precipitation, especially for the mountains, for late this week. Timing/location/amounts remain uncertain at this point, as well as snow levels which will determine snowfall totals (if any) for the higher terrain.
