#TIL: There were more subspecies of #elephants than I was aware of. We all know the Asian elephant and the African elephant (divided into the bush – or savanna – elephant and the smaller forest elephant).

But until now I was unaware of two more extinct kinds of elephants:

The Syrian elephant went extinct either 200,000 years ago or around 700 BC likely due to a change in the climate.

The North African elephant went extinct between 300 and 400 AD due to over-hunting.

💁🏻‍♀️ ICYMI: 🐘🛡️ When a 5.2-magnitude #earthquake hit Southern #California on Monday, five African #elephants at #SanDiego Zoo Safari Park formed a protective "alert circle" that lasted about four minutes.

Zoo footage shows how the adults positioned themselves with backs together and faces outward while young Mkhaya ran for safety between them. Meanwhile, young Zuli stayed at the edge, receiving reassuring trunk taps from his caretaker Khosi.
