Doch statt Abfall - also Knochen, Köpfe usw. - werden oftmals komplette, essbare #Fische verarbeitet, da diese eine höheren Proteingehalt aufweisen. Aus vier Kilo Fisch wird so ein Kilo #Fischmehl. Ein Viertel aller weltweit gefangenen Fische enden heute als Fischmehl. Absurd: Fischfarmen verbrauchen oft mehr #Fisch als sie produzieren.
Das Feature zeigt, dass der Fischmehl-Boom schon jetzt dramatische Folgen für Millionen Menschen weltweit hat. Am Beispiel des Senegals wird deutlich, dass mit den Fischen, die zu Fischmehl verarbeitet werden, den Bewohnern ein günstiges und proteinreiches Nahrungsmittel fehlt. Hunger, soziale Spannungen und schließlich die #Flucht nach #Europa können die Folgen sein.
