just came across this gem of a sample - used by A Tribe Called Quest on the most fun track on The Love Movement, Rock Rock Y’all. it’s from Charles Wright & Watts 103rd Street Band - the same whose Express Yourself was used by NWA (whose Eazy-E was Charles Wright’s nephew).

"Jungle Boogie" is a #funk record by #KoolAndTheGang from their 1973 album #WildAndPeaceful. It reached number four as a single, and became very popular in nightclubs. #Billboard ranked it as the #number12SingleFor1974, despite as many as 36 No. 1 singles that year. In 1994, Jungle Boogie was repopularized on #theSoundtrack of the film #PulpFiction. It was also used in promo packages by wrestling promotion #ExtremeChampionshipWrestling in the mid-1990s. In 1992.

in the mid-90s, LA #hiphop was deep in Parliament/Funkadelic-inspired territory, but another take on #PFunk, and a more direct descendant which unlike #GFunk adopted not just the sounds but also much of the free spirit of the #funk, was developed by Oakland’s Digital Underground (of No Nose Job and Humpty Dance fame, and also for being the group 2pac started with). they had a string of great albums but for whatever reason their best, most coherent album is also their most slept on (and not generally available on streaming services) - Future Rhythm. check it out sometime.

Charles Rouse - Two is One

This one starts out quite early-70s-jazz-funk, swerves into the great track Hopscotch, and keeps swerving from there.

Definitely not the Rouse you might be expecting, given his long association with Monk, but the Rouse you might need.

Part of the Mack Avenus Strata-East reissue series, remastered by Kevin Gray. Pretty immaculate.
