So I played through RoboCop: Rogue City and I’m a bit divided.

On the one hand, it plays really well, though the aiming and such on the Xbox wasn’t really all that great (though when I realized you can turn down the graphics things improved dramatically) and the story is a decent 80s action movie plotline with all the cheese and tropes attached. I happen to like that sort of thing so it was excellent even if the story kinda seemed to grow too tired and maybe even a bit boring towards the end—though that might’ve just been due to the fact that there is a reason those old action movies rarely go beyond the 90 minutes or so, and that’s because the plot usually doesn’t stay fresh and interesting enough beyond that and this game tries to take it a lot further.

Then on the other hand there’s also a lot of bugs. Or… well ok maybe not as much direct bugs, though there are those too, but mostly the AI seems a bit weird at times and that can kinda kill the mood. There was also some weird puzzle design choices that made no sense to me, like for example there was a small puzzle where you need to restore power by going to a fuse box and turn some switches on in the correct order to turn it back on. As a hint (I at least assume it was supposed to be a hint) there are numbers below the switches, but for the life of me I was not able to figure out what the fuck are they supposed to mean. I tried to find some note or whatever that would’ve explained what the correct order is supposed to be but there was NOTHING that mentioned anything even remotely related. I mean there are only a few switches and there’s no fail state for failing—the puzzle just resets—so you can easily brute force it, but the fact that you have a puzzle where even all the guides just say the solution is to brute force it is just bonkers and not that great design in my opinion.

And that kinda goes for the rest of the game. There are great moments but there’s also a lot of these random “what the fuck is this” things that keep popping up and while you can live with them easily, they do lessen the experience somewhat. But then again this is not a high budget triple A game, so some jank is to be expected I guess. Still, given how high quality the indie scene is these days, the standards are not as low as they used to be so it’s fair to assume that the players expect more.

But all in all it’s a very decent, mediocre game, and I mean it in the best way possible. The industry NEEDS more mediocre games to fill out the gaps between the the high budget experiences and all the live service junk. They usually cost less and are fun for a few hours, and they are just games. Just pure fun, like more games should be.

So if you haven’t played it yet, I can recommend it if you at least somewhat like the 80s action movies and/or RoboCop specifically. It’s a decent RoboCop interactive movie-like experience that maybe overstays it’s welcome a bit but at least not so much that it moves in to your basement and you couldn’t make it leave. It’s fun, a bit gory action, that works as a distraction from the world for however long it takes you to either finish the game or until you get bored.

Pin-Bot for the #NES is a pretty decent pinball game by Rare. It's the most "realistic" pinball game for the NES I've witnessed, almost too much detail on the table. It is light years ahead of the classic "Pinball". Is it fun? Yeah, it's actually pretty fun. Is it worth picking up the cart for $10? Absolutely. Inside the cart is a beautiful TxROM board (MMC3) from with plenty of gold lettering, chock full of ICs.
