Conservative shadow technology minister Ben Spencer has tabled an amendment to the government’s Data Bill which would make public bodies collect data based on sex at birth rather than their gender identity. Green Party MP Sian Berry told HuffPost UK: “Trans rights need to be defended by everyone right now, especially those with the power to make new laws. This deeply disturbing amendment would be a gross violation of trans people’s right to privacy, risking a mass outing of trans people across the UK. If passed, it would dangerously increase the risk of harassment and abuse already faced by this minority community."

HuffPost UK · Tories Accused Of 'Dystopian' Attack On Trans CommunityBy Kate Nicholson
Newly elected Green councillor in Maidstone, Stuart Jeffrey, spoke to BBC Politics South East. He said: “The media has platformed Nigel Farage over and over, pushed his message out at the expense of parties like mine. Last week we had the same number of MPs as Reform, this week we still have more councillors than Reform. We don't get anywhere near the coverage given to Farage and his team and that is why the public vote as they do - we struggle because of the media presence.”

Zack seems to have a pretty good message and to be keen and energetic to be Green Party leader.

Carla and Adrian have been pretty good, but they haven't succeeded in getting the Green Party messages all over the press.

Think the UK public and press might not really be sophisticated enough to understand a job share. Probably better to have one person full time.

Dunno if the incumbents will even stand again. Four years is a long time for Green Party leaders. Usually supposed to be every two years.

Zack seems likely to get my vote unless someone better turns up. Would be really great to get the country fired up about the party somehow. God knows the other parties are all absolutely awful.

Here he is answering Owen Jone's questions.

And he was talking to Novara this evening too:

Just declined a call from a contact in my phone because I couldn't remember who they were (I thought they might have been an old colleague or a recruiter). Searched the name and it was a local member of the #GreenParty (I have done some leafleting and door knocking, organised via email and messaging groups). Absolutely not. Do not call me. Didn't leave a voicemail (unless it's a really long one and they are still going).

There is a complete and utter lack of vision from left-wing political parties at the moment, so I'm cautiously excited about Zack Polanski's promise of eco-populism in his leadership bid. He's the only Green Party official, aside from Caroline Lucas, who has made any kind of lasting impression, so he's probably the person best suited to the task at the present moment.

I think there's a great opportunity to build a campaign around policies like the nationalisation of public infrastructure, shifting to a four-day week and fixing the rental sector – all of those will have tangible benefits in people's lives and can be connected with decarbonisation. While it's important to oppose fascists, it can't be the only defining factor of our movement. Curious to see how this plays out and what he comes up with.

The Guardian · Green deputy launches leadership bid with UK ‘eco-populism’ visionBy Peter Walker

#EcoPopulism - I don't like the sound of that. #populism means promising false simple "solutions" to complex problems. And these days it is basically a euphemism for #fascism, and we don't want to be seen near that. looks like Zack wants to join labour and the tories in trying to out-reform Reform. theguardian.com/politics/2025/ #GreenParty #UKpolitics

This is the correct move by Zack Polanski. There is space for a radical, leftwing party in Britain that shouts about its policies and takes on Reform head-on. Polanski is popular, carries none of Ramsay's baggage and is a superb communicator.

The Guardian · Green deputy launches leadership bid with UK ‘eco-populism’ visionBy Peter Walker

UK folks, I just learned via a Guardian article* that the Green Party only has 60,000 members and the Reform (fash) party has 220,000.

Green Party rates:
• Suggested Membership Contribution: £20 a month
• Reduced Rate Membership: £13 a year (If you are in low-waged employment.)
• Student Membership: £6 a year
• Concessionary Membership: £6 a year (If you are without paid work.)

You can join here:

• England and Wales: join.greenparty.org.uk
• Scotland: members.greens.scot/join
• Northern Ireland: greenpartyni.org/join_new_memb

If you're unemployed/on benefits it's ***50p per month***, and if you're on low income it's about £1 per month. If you're exhausted you don't have to participate/vote, you can join and then ignore all the emails and know that you're funding the only UK-wide political party with MPs that has openly objected to the Supreme Court decision.

Edit: Two people have replied to tell me that you can't have voting members of a limited company. You can if it's a company limited by guarantee, which is what Reform UK is.

🗳️ The Greens primary vote held steady but they are struggling to retain seats in the lower house.

They have lost two of their three seats in Brisbane — Griffith and Brisbane — while they may hold Ryan. Adam Bandt is fighting to hold his seat of Melbourne which was considered a safe seat.

Wills in Melbourne's inner north and Richmond in northern NSW are the other seats were the Greens still have a chance to win.
