#holograms

I know it's a cliché but as I get older fewer things fill me with wonder...but no matter how much I learn about them real #holograms always feel like actual magic to me.

I remember my Dad once describing a hologram he saw that demonstrated a working magnifying glass over text, with the lens magnifying the words.

I spotted this one recently and picked it up. I'm not sure if it's the same one he described to me all those years ago but it's still a lovely example and it makes me think of him.

Unearthed some of my old #holograms from college, inspired by the recent 3Blue1Brown video. This is my favorite piece: a shard of glass and a thin layer of chemical emulsion, revealing a a silvery White Rabbit belt buckle owned by my prof, Mike Hannum.

What deep magic this is, echoed in the endless dark sustain of the octave #mandolin... I'll share some more soon. ✨

What happened to #holograms? The 3D photos in monochrome laser colours?

Holograms were EVERYWHERE in the 80s/90s, possibly reaching an apex when there was an official hologram portrait of the Queen in 2004:

But now it seems impossible to find them except on a credit card sticker. It is so odd how they have disappeared, to the point where people assume "hologram" means something else entirely.

Searching for "hologram" online just shows sculptures or spinning things or shiny paper or projections onto a bit of cloth. None of them are actual 3D photos.
