Help me out here

In the past, politicians always seemed so immensely educated and far removed from normal people
When they spoke, sometimes you only understood half of what they said
Back then, I thought they were so out of touch, so far removed from the people who were directly affected by politics

Now I see some of them and wonder how they got their job in the first place and how stupid they can talk

What went wrong?
