Vous êtes assis dans l'herbe au milieu de la pente d'une verte prairie. Si au loin, quelques chants d'oiseaux apportent une présence discrète à ce havre de paix, vous ne vous rendez pas forcément compte de la présence de dizaines de tout jeunes criquets qui vous observent, là à même pas un mètre.
Et puis, à deux pas, sous les feuilles tendres d'un chêne de deux ans, se délecte silencieusement une chenille velue, coquettement parée pour je ne sais quel événement à venir.

Críquet juvénile accroché à la pointe d'un brin d'herbe. Elle fait un peu moins d'un centimètre, le criquet la moitié. Le criquet est brun pâle tirant vers le blond, le brin vert, nervuré, et l'arrière plan flou et vert.

Sur fond blanc et vert, flou, partagé en deux selon une diagonale, une contre-plongée au raz de l'herbe. À droite, tiges, inflorescence et feuille d'un pied de poacée ; à gauche, deux feuilles de chêne vert tendre. Sous la plus éloignée, une chenille sombre à points blancs sur les côtés de ses segments, pourvue de poils roux, donne l'air d'escalader le devers de cette feuille, en sortant tout de même la tête par dessus la bordure du limbe.

A little cooler last night, so fewer numbers in and around the moth box, but still attracted:

1) Pale Prominent (an excellent woodchip mimic)

2) Lunar Thorn (a fallen leaf mimic)

3) Poplar Grey (spot the owl eyes)

4) And if you missed him earlier... the hilarious Spectacle

A 2.5cm moth on a palm facing left. It resembles a pale piece of wood chipping and is an irregular wedge shape. It is light woody brown with thin dark brown grainy streaks. It has a small tuft halfway down its back which has a dark brown tip. It has a little light brown snout that pokes out the front.

A moth on a finger. It has a thick pale orange abdomen. It holds two heavily scalloped pale orange and almost translucent wings vertically above its abdomen. The wings resemble fallen autumnal leaves. There is a darker thin orange band running across the wing within which there is two tiny crescent shaped stigmata, hence its name Lunar Thorn

These are not its eyes but they do look like eyes behind specs. It has a tufted gingery mohican above and two wiry antennae that stick out left and right just below the specs, almost like a fine thin moustache

Last night I had two similar, but different species, with the most amazing #faces

Top - Spectacle
Bottom - Dark Spectacle (albeit a faded specimen)

Difference is Spectacle has more defined band & stigmata on the forewing whereas Dark Spectacle is more plain charcoal grey with redder cross lines. Both have #spectacle faces

Front on shot of Spectacle moth. He has a furry snout (palps) two white rings that resemble spectacles and wiry antennae which resemble an old-fashioned moustache. He also has a gingery mohican tuft. It reminds me of an old WW2 RAF pilot.

Side on shot of Spectacle moth on a finger. It faces right. It is largely dark grey, with a darker almost black band across the middle which is edged in ginger lines. it has two stigmata within the band, one oval, one kidney shaped. Its mohican point forward from the top of its head.

Front on shot of Dark Spectacle moth. It too has white markings edged in black, above its eyes, that resemble a big pair of spectacles. It has lost its tuft suggesting it is an older moth. It also has a snout that sticks out.

Side on shot of Dark Spectacle. It is plainer and more light charcoal grey albeit this is an older and faded specimen that has lost its tuft. Its central band is less pronounced and the stigmata less obvious. The edges of the central band are chestnut red.

Small Snakefly (Xanthostigma xanthostigma) in #Bath #Somerset #UK. Snakeflies are under-recorded and seldom-seen insects - only the second one I've ever seen. This one was beaten from a Hawthorn tree.
