For #findsfriday we have various #potterymarks from the late #middleages
These exciting pottery fragments, which show a wide variety of potter's marks and #stamps, were discovered during one of our #excavations in 2023. They are mainly applied to the rims of grey #earthenware pots and can provide clues as to the #manufacturer of the #vessels
The #pottery marks are incised X-shaped, V-shaped, cross-shaped, crest-shaped or with parallel notches.

Absurdly, in this piece about the effect of #Trump's tariffs on #UK #exporters, the #BBC seem to have found one of the few Trumpers in #Wales, the finance director of a #manufacturer who exports to the US who thinks Trump doing the right thing. Where do they find them?

BBC News'It's a huge blow to Scotland's whisky industry'Business in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland tell us what US tariffs could mean for them.

@EricAlper Yes, this is old.

However:

It did not have in-app purchases.

Oh, it didn't come with #ads.

It had no direct or indirect #expiration date where it stopped working altogether.

It continued working even when its original #manufacturer went out of business.

You really owned it.

It had no dependency to the #cloud.

There were no features that stopped working because of some remote marketing guy decided so.

It didn't contain call-back routines to the manufacturer.

It did not listen to its surrounding and generate #voiceprofiles for all people you meet.

It didn't spy on its buyers and sell those voice profiles an other very personal #data to #brokers which resell to #insurances, #advertisement companies and worse.

You could actually go to any electronic shop to get it repaired.

It was not overpriced.

It just played #music. It was perfect.

My favourite #debunking of the "government paid $EXCESSIVE for $THING" kind of story was by Jerry #Pournelle. It's currently offline, and archive.org is still recovering, so I can't link it. Actual numbers below are made up because I don't remember the exact figures, but the gist is correct.

It was the "#Pentagon paid $17,000 for a #toilet seat" one. What actually happened was that the Pentagon needed to procure more toilet seats for the B-52 bomber - the planes were (and still are!) old and stuff wears out or gets damaged. There was no remaining stock of parts.

The problem was that the #manufacturer had long ago junked the tooling used to make the parts (they were metal, requiring tool & die etc). Making that tooling is quite expensive - it's difficult, skilled work. Other costs involved in getting a #manufacturing line set up are also expensive. And they couldn't justify buying and storing tons of extra toilet seats.

So what you get is a high fixed #cost to rebuild a line, divided by a relatively small number of finished articles, giving an apparently absurd price per unit. Say, a million dollars to make 60 replacement toilet seats to original spec.

And that gives... $16,667 per seat. And a great, totally #misleading #headline.

One example of the #quality #standards in #eurorack #synth #industry. Just recently a small US #manufacturer #Qu-bit replaced one of their modules I bought in December 2020. #Free of charge, they even reimbursed the international shipping. It is a #multieffect module that I now use a lot in my more rhythmic #tracks and I'm very happy for that update. It was not a faulty module but had some design issues that were imminent in my specific workflow. New version works like charm. Really happy.

" One of the main means for reducing the #environmental #footprint of digital technology is to extend the lifespan of our devices. #Fairphone is a #European #manufacturer that designs and produces #smartphones with the goal of having a lower environmental footprint and better social impact than the norms in the electronics industry."

@q3k Does any regulator know of this #Sabotage of #CriticalInfrastructure by the #Manufacturer?

I'm shure these trains ain't exclusive to to one country and regulators from @BNetzA and @kartellamt@social.bund.de to @EU_Commission will likely be very interested in such deliberate acts of #AntiCompetiton, #AntiRepair and basically attacks on #PublicTransport #infrastructure done by #NEWAG to fleece customers!

I mean, this is next-level assholeism and makes #JohnDeere and #Apple look like #RightToRepair fans.

DO NOT BUY HP PRINTERS!

I don't believe I've ever seen a more #dastardly #plan from a #hardware #manufacturer.

If you buy an #HP #printer and sign up for the optional HP Plus #service, you'll get a #firmware #update that will FORCE you to #purchase *only* new HP #ink cartridges — for the life of your printer. And once that firmware update happens, there is *no way* to undo it.

DO NOT BUY HP PRINTERS!
