Medieval ‘hairy books’ were bound in sealskin, study finds A recently published study, released in Royal Society Open Science, has turned a new and surprising chapter in medieval manuscript history: dozens of volumes long believed to be bound in local animal hides were actually covered with seal skin shipped from the cold northern waters of the Atlantic. The collaboration between an international team of archaeologists, historians, and bioinformatics experts compared 32 French, English, and Belgian Cistercian monasteries’ books, particularly those from the renowned Clairvaux Abbey in France’s Champagne province. Using advanced scientific techniques like electrostatic zooarchaeology by mass spectrometry (eZooMS) and ancient DNA analysis, the scientists discovered that some of the so-called “hairy books” — named as such due to the visible hair fibers on their outer coverings, or chemises — were bound with the skin of seals...

Il Voltone dei Caccianemici / The Vault of Caccianemici

The Voltone which we see now was constructed in medieval times thanks to the Pascipoveri family. The Caccianemici family became the owners of the arch/vault and its surrounding houses in 1394 and is named after them. (We've seen their door/window before!)
The site where it stands used to be Porta San'Agata and even before that was part of the Roman Bononia circle (about the 3rd century BCE) ✨

This was taken from the church of San Michele in Bosco looking out over Bologna. The tower you can see there is the Asinelli tower - it was built sometime between 1109-1119.

However, in a newly published study presented in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, an old truth is revealed: women played a significant role in manuscript production. Researchers from the University of Bergen in Norway discovered that at least 1.1% of medieval manuscripts were transcribed by female scribes, which is very likely more than 110,000 books...

#Doorsday's child has far to go ... all the way to #Córdoba in fact.

This is a lovely old #door from the Mosque-Cathedral or #Mezquita with details of #MoorishArchitecture. In fact, it's one of the oldest surviving gates of the former mosque! The door's decoration dates back to 855 when it was known as Bab al-Wuzara ("Viziers' Gate). Lots of Al-Andalus state officials used to enter the mosque here. The Great Mosque of Córdoba was converted into a Catholic #cathedral in the 13th century. It's a World Heritage Site since 1984.

A weathered stone facade, likely part of a historic building such as the Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba, dominates the frame. The stonework is a light beige, showing significant signs of age and erosion, with varied textures and uneven surfaces. A prominent horseshoe archway, characteristic of Moorish architecture, frames a set of aged, dark metal double doors. The arch is outlined in a lighter stone and features alternating red and white voussoirs. Above the archway, there is a rectangular panel with intricate, though worn, carvings. Flanking the central archway are sections of the stone wall with further decorative elements, including what appear to be blocked-up windows or niches with geometric patterns. The top of the facade is crenellated, with a series of rectangular merlons against a partly cloudy blue sky. The ground in front of the facade is paved with light-coloured stone slabs, showing some signs of wear.

On your left there is Palazzo dell'Archiginnasio and on your right, a sliver of the Basilica to San Petronio.
Construction started on the Basilica in 1390 - alla Sagrada Familia style - they were still building it in 1514 when a new architect was brought on to build the dome. Legend has it that Pope Pius IV halted the construction of the "megalomaniac dream" and encouraged the building of the Archiginnasio.
The Archiginnasio is one of the most important buildings in Bologna. It was the main hub of the University. It now houses the Anatomical Theatre and The Archeological Museum.
We got the Archiginnasio but the Basilica has never been finished. 😂

"Open The Noor!" It's #Doorsday! 🚪
Being a bit cheeky with this door - as it's a door within a door - Doorception ✨

The open door is part of Il Palazzo Monti Poi Salina, this version - built between 1736 and 1738. One of the courtyards has a well dating back to the 14th century, oh and the palazzo was used as a bomb shelter during World War II.
There's like a web designer office or something across the road - I don't know much about it to be honest! 😂
