hi, oddly specific question: extended family have tasked me with finding some sort of cheap household hardware that i can use for meshing at a slightly larger apartment

i have used a 40 EUR FRITZ!Box with OpenWRT and WPS before, but I cannot necessarily connect the access points together using Ethernet. has anybody else tried this and have anything to recommend (OpenWRT preferred)?

Huh. #OpenWrt just...stopped sending IPv4 DNS options in DHCP out a while ago. That might explain a few things.

It'd be nice if I was actually notified when things were fucky on my network.

So I tried out technetium on recommendation . Despite my better judgement of having to schlep in the dotnet sdk on my openwrt build. Only to discover that it doesn't implement IPV6 Dhcp at all and also doesn't allow chaining to an existing dhcpv6 server... Still boggles my mind how a project can get positive reviews and miss something so integral as v6 in this day and age #ipv6 #openwrt github.com/TechnitiumSoftware/

The usage of IPv6 is increasing and many ISP now provide IPv6 to their customers so it would be useful also to have support for DHCPv6

@CenturyAvocado Yeah, I've been fiddling with it on and off the last 48+ hours (including the status above) and I'm still not sure it's configured correctly. Just some examples:

- Failover isn't working, metrics (yes, I set them) are being ignored and it's routing to both interfaces. For now I've turned off WANB (thankfully that's an option for me.)
- Wouldn't route through WANB at all until I added WANB to the WAN/WAN6 firewall zone. I didn't see this documented anywhere.
- IPv6 isn't working. I have no idea what the magic settings are to get WAN6 to use DHCP-PD to get a prefix and then have LAN advertise that prefix. Stuff on the 'net is largely "LOL it's supported dude!" or "LOL why would you want that dude?" rather than "Make sure this setting is set and add this to that, you can check it's right using blah". Nothing at all appears in the logs that might help, not even a "Timeout getting prefix from X:X:X:X". Tried with and without mwan3, no difference in behavior.

It's... a mess? I'm very close to building my own router at this point from scratch which is bananas, but I have done it before.

The hardware was refurbished, including a quick analysis of the equipment. I quickly realized that modern and up-to-date network firewall firmware could be installed on both devices without much effort and high costs. Since #BSDRP , #OPNSense and #pfSense no longer support x86 (i586/i686) architectures, the choice fell on the current #OpenWrt and #DDWRT versions for x86 (i586/i686) architectures. 2/3

Managing Network Devices via #Orgmode Table and #OpenWRT Router

I do maintain only one single table with all of my devices. I can control their IP and their ability to connect to the Internet (or not).

With this table, I do have a great overview of my devices and their IPs.

I thought you might like the idea ...
