Dawnland goes behind-the-scenes as this historic body grapples with difficult truths, redefines reconciliation, and charts a new course for state and tribal relations.

"Dawnland aired on Independent Lens on PBS in November 2018 and 2021, reaching more than two million viewers. The film won a national Emmy® Award for Outstanding Research in 2019 and made the American Library Association’s list of 2020 Notable Videos for Adults."

#Protest held in #PortlandME to support #PalestinianActivist

March 18, 2025

PORTLAND (WGME) -- "A rally in downtown Portland was held Tuesday afternoon, protesting the detention and proposed deportation of a #Palestinian activist.

"Community leaders turned out in support of #MahmoudKhalil, a permanent U.S. resident and student who was arrested a week ago over his involvement in #ProPalestine protests at #ColumbiaUniversity.

"He's accused of distributing pro-Hamas propaganda, including flyers bearing the group’s logo and organizing protests that disrupted classes and harassed Jewish students.

"Khalil is currently being held by immigration officers in Louisiana but has not been charged with a crime.

"The State Department is looking to revoke his green card.

"His attorneys have filed a lawsuit challenging his detention, arguing his rights were violated.

"'This is a travesty of justice,' #FaisalKhan of the #CarolinaPeaceCenter said. 'A stain on the moral conscience of the United States. And yet, the American public remains largely silent. How much longer will the silence continue, I ask? How much longer will people turn away from the suffering of innocent lives. Silence is complicity.'"

#Maine protesters call out #SenatorSusanCollins for not holding a town hall in 25 years

Story by Allyson Lapierre, WGME, March 16, 2025

PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) -- "Dozens of protesters took to Congress Square Park in #PortlandME on Sunday, calling on Senator Susan Collins to hold a town hall for her constituents.

"The group #IndivisibleGreaterPortland says Senator Collins has not held a town hall for Mainers in over 25 years. So, on Sunday, the group held a town hall without her.

"Participants voiced concerns about federal cuts from #DOGE, #tariffs, and Trump's talk about taking over #Greenland and Gaza.

"'People are scared. People have questions. People need answers. People don't understand what's going on. Things are just moving too fast, and they're out of touch with their elected officials who basically are sending form letters and not explaining their votes,' Marie Follayttar, who attended the event, said.

"CBS13 reached out to Senator Collins for a response but did not hear back."

#Postal workers rally against proposals to privatize #USPS

Maine Public | By Kaitlyn Budion
Published March 20, 2025

"Postal workers across #Maine are sounding alarms about proposals to privatize the U.S. Postal Service.

"Workers in #PortlandME and #BangorME rallied today to make the case that private companies will not be able to fully meet the mail service needs of Maine residents- especially those in rural areas.

"In Bangor, protestors chanted 'U.S. mail is not for sale' and held signs as passing cars honked in support.

"Tom Smith is the legislative director with the local chapter of the American Postal Workers Union. He said shifting mail delivery to private companies would only make it more expensive to send and slower to arrive.

"'It becomes a for-profit business where the bottom line is profits, as long as people can suffer a couple of days without their meds, as long as the bottom dollar is found,' Smith said. 'And that's not what we are. We are an essential service of the United States people.'

"Smith said workers are on edge with all the debate in Washington, and #InstitutionalKnowledge is being lost as some long-time staff take early retirement offers.

"'The Postal Service is inexpensive, it's prompt, it's reliable,' he said. "And especially in rural areas, people count on the Postal Service for life saving meds to Grandma's latest batch of snickerdoodles.'

"Smith said the union is encouraging the public to reach out to local and federal representatives to show their support. The National Association of Letter Carriers will also hold a rally in Portland on Sunday."

#PortlandME teachers, parents join national #protests against #Trump’s cuts to #education

Teachers from Deering High, Rowe Elementary and Presumpscot Elementary held a 'walk-in' Wednesday in a show of support for public education amid cuts to the U.S. #DepartmentOfEducation.

by Riley Board, March 19, 2025

"'Education is a right, that is why we have to fight,' a group of educators, parents and teachers chanted outside Deering High School early Wednesday morning. To a chorus of loud honks from passing cars on Stevens Avenue, they waved signs opposing staff cuts to the federal Department of Education and other actions President Donald Trump has taken that could affect public education.
The group of about 80 were participating in a nationwide walk-in organized by the National Education Association, the country’s largest teachers union. More than 100 similar events took place across 26 states; the event was scheduled for Wednesday because it’s the day that federal elected officials are returning to their home districts as Congress goes to recess.

"'Now is the time to send a message: Their decisions in Washington, D.C., matter here at home,' the NEA said in a statement on its website."

[...]

"Kerrie Dowdy, president of the Portland Education Association, the union that represents teachers in the district, said the vast majority of all American students, including 95% of students with #disabilities, attend #PublicSchools.

"'All students benefit from programs run by the Department of Education, and we’re here today to protect our students and to protect our public schools,' Dowdy said."

So, I've gotten to know some of the unhoused folks in #PortlandME. I listen to their stories when I'm protesting, and try to have a little something to hand out to them (money, warm gloves, healthy snack packs). It breaks my heart to see so many in need when there are empty spaces and even boarded up buildings downtown, and yet ritzy boutique shops everywhere! Someone can afford the high rents -- but it's not the people! I remember when one could rent an affordable studio apartment over a retail space. Not anymore! I couldn't afford to live there, and pretty much most of my friends have been pushed out because of gentrification. And now there is urban decay because of the empty spaces. Is it the 1980s again?!!
